Friendship

I’m thinking about friendship and the interactions that happen over time in our relationships. I lost a good friend this last week who has been ill for several years. I’m saddened, but I’m also peaceful knowing that she’s still here in spirit although I can’t give her a big hug anymore. I’ve been going over our correspondence for the past 5+ years, and I’m taken with the kindnesses and humor that pass between people in a friendship. Little bits of wisdom and respect are offered and exchanged. There is a real comfort to having an ease of acceptance and a knowing between friends. It’s one of the wonderful things we have in this life and beyond. Just a look says it all.

What have I been up to?

Last Monday at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills on bass was great fun. Some great folks stopped by the stage for some music.

My parties on Tuesday and Sunday were a blast as well - one in Cuchara and one in Pueblo. Playing for friends in intimate settings is very rewarding.

What am I up to this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills one more time. The weather is supposed to be cooler, and I think it’ll be a great time.

Friday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Daniel Market which should be fun. We did a concert at the Merc in La Veta a few weeks ago that was wonderful, and I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with him. Come out to the Gorge if you’d like a fun day in the great outdoors. We’ll be there on Labor Day too.

Sunday 7:00-8:15 is my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert. This is my last one on Concert Window as they are shutting down on the 15th of September. I enjoy these so much, and I’m still deciding whether to do the next concerts on StageIt.com or Facebook Live. What’s your preference?

——

That’s it for this week. I appreciate you and your friendship.

Best always,

Tom

Woodstock

I’ve been thinking a lot about Woodstock. I’ve done several songs from the festival over the past couple weeks, and because this last weekend marked 50 years since that event I figured I should reflect on it. I grew up knowing it was a magical weekend - hearing snippets of the music and the vibe over the years. I’ve watched several shows and documentaries this past month that tried to capture the feeling of the event and the mood of the country during that time. We used to run into hippies all the time in Taos back in the late 60’s and early 70’s. My parents told us to steer clear of them, but I knew they were in touch with something worthwhile. Over the years I’ve grown to appreciate their message of peace and love. It seems we need that even more today than ever. My study of religion, philosophy, science, and spirituality has brought me full circle right back to where the hippies were on that magic weekend. Their awareness of purpose and intent for humanity cuts me to the core. Unity and caring are still the key to a happy and healthy world. Why live in a world of fear when you could live in a world of love? Woodstock was a successful experiment in that.

What have I been up to?

Monday, Tuesday, and Friday I played at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills on bass. We had several friends come out, and the weather was mostly perfect.

Thursday was the last Yellow Pine Barbecue of the season, and it was a good one. The evening was very special with some fine requests for some great songs, and there were friends and hugs all around.

What’s up this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills as the summer draws to a close. We’ve had fun learning new songs and meeting folks from all over the world.

Tuesday and Sunday I have private parties for some wonderful folks in Cuchara and Pueblo. I really enjoy doing these. If you ever have a special event or other excuse for some live music then give me a yell. There’s nothing better than enjoying a space of time with good friends and music.

——

That’s it for this week. I heard back from just a few folks about the new online concert venue. I’d love to have more folks weigh in on whether I should do these on Facebook Live or StageIt.com. Let me know.

Best always,

Tom

Online Concerts Big Change

I have really been enjoying doing my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert series for this past two and a half years. It’s a great way to connect with friends on a regular basis who can’t be where I’m playing. I have been using Concert Window for these concerts, and it has been overall a fairly good experience although sometimes the quality has been glitchy, and some of you have had trouble logging in or getting booted off during the show. Well, Concert Window just announced that they are closing their service on September 16th, so I’ll be switching to another service. I could either switch to another service similar to Concert Window that I’ve found called StageIt or I could switch to Facebook and use Facebook Live. I do my concerts for free although some of you are very kind and throw a tip my way. StageIt takes a higher percentage of tips (approaching 40%) than Concert Window does at 30%, while with Facebook I could put a PayPal.me link in the video description that would take 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction. Both StageIt and Facebook are very good quality video and audio. StageIt is set up specifically by musicians for musicians, so there are other parts of their service that may be helpful. I may have a lot more viewers on Facebook. There are other services like YouTube Live and Twitch, but they each have their comptomises. I am open to other suggestions you might have. I did quite a bit of research on each service. So what do you prefer? My fear is that some people who like Concert Window will be opposed to using Facebook while others who are Facebook friends and have never particularly liked Concert Window will be reluctant to try a similar service in StageIt. Let me know. I so value these concerts and the opportunity to play for you all, and I want this to be a smooth transition.

What have I been up to?

Last Monday was a fun day at the Royal Gorge Bridge with many folks stopping by the stage to listen and interact - even a group from Korea!

Thursday was a huge group of folks for the next-to-last barbecue at the Yellow Pine. We had to turn away a bunch of people. It was a wonderful evening.

Friday was my concert at the Merc in La Veta with Daniel Market, and it was a heck of a night! We swapped songs and stories, and some folks said it was the best show they’d ever seen at the Merc. That’s awfully high praise, and it was a joy to be a part of.

What am I up to this week?

Monday, Tuesday, and Friday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills. We’ve really been enjoying these afternoons, and I’d love to have you there if you’re up for a fun time at the Royal Gorge.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 is the last barbecue of the season at the Yellow Pine. There will be an evening there of BYO A&W (appetizers and wine) on Thursday, September 5th that I’m also playing for, but this is the last barbecue. If you’d like to be there I’d suggest calling right now - 719-742-3528. As I said above, we had to turn away a lot of folks last week, and I’m sure this last week will be the same. I can’t wait!

That’s it for this week. Let me know what you think about the online concert venue choice.

Best always,

Tom

Heartache

My heart aches this Sunday evening after the weekend's news. There is so much beauty and joy in the world, and yet some insist on spreading hatred and fear. Sometimes they spread it out of fear, and sometimes it’s just malicious manipulation for kicks. I don’t understand them, and yet I know that they are me and I am them. We are all connected. And then people respond with hatred and anger. And so my heart aches. I continue to spread all the love and goodwill I can, but sometimes it is discouraging. It is worth trying. It is worth continuing to love. The hardest part is not knowing what to do next. So I head to bed with a heavy heart. And now it’s Monday morning, and my mind didn’t ease overnight. It’s strange how sometimes my purpose and awareness kicks in and gives me peace. Just as I wrote last night, I don’t know what to do next. My heart says to love even more. I know that I am an endless wellspring that is part of the divine force of the universe, and letting that spring flow is the best thing I can do. Love is always the answer - no matter what the question. Someday I’ll understand. Someday we’ll all understand.

What have I been up to?

Monday was a pretty day at the Royal Gorge Bridge playing music with Dennis Mills. We had some really nice folks stop by to listen and chat.

Thursday was a wonderful night at the Yellow Pine Barbecue. There were so many good friends and new faces. It was a joy!

Friday was really sweet night at Bistoro. The food and friends really made the evening. We may need to start having a cover charge of some sort to help costs at the restaurant. Let me know if you’re okay with that.

Saturday was a memorial and two parties up in Cuchara with more good friends, and hugs, smiles, and tears were bountiful.

Sunday was my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert, and I played old country tunes for memories and toe tapping. It was a blast!

What am I up this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills in the great outdoors. We’re having a great time playing oldies and originals. Come on out if you can.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 is the penultimate (next-to-last) time for the Yellow Pine Barbecue. This has been a great summer in the barn playing for some wonderful folks. If you’ve wanted to make it there then come on out before the season is over. You need to make a reservation by Tuesday. 719-742-3528

Friday 7-9 is a very special concert at the La Veta Mercantile swapping songs with my friend Daniel Market. Daniel is a brilliant songwriter, and I’m honored to share the stage with him. Expect an evening of laughter and reflection in the best songwriting tradition. Tickets are $20 at the door or $15 at their Facebook page. We’d love to have you.

——

That’s it for this week. Today I’m going to reflect and try to show love to everyone I meet, starting with you.

With love,

Tom
