I’m thinking this morning about our personal motivation and how others motivate us. In history others have used all kinds of things to motivate us, and we use these same things ourselves. I try to be my own person and unaffected by others, but it doesn’t always happen that way. We are all intertwined, and a certain amount of shared feeling is part of being in this world. But we don’t have to get wrapped up in these feelings and especially fear. It’s a trap sometimes, and it’s often the way others try to motivate us. A peaceful mind is brought by the realization that fear is usually about things that never happen. I’m often reminded of that quote from FDR at the beginning of World War II - “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Others can use this fear to manipulate us into doing things against our best interest. Everything works out in the end, I believe. I have always carried a peace inside me from deep down. There is a knowing inside us that defeats fear. It comes from love, and holding onto that when others try to push our buttons with fear will carry the day. Believe it.
What have I been up to?
A week ago Friday was a wonderful night at Walter’s Brewery Taproom. So many good friends came out to enjoy the evening, and although it was a little loud we all had a good time. I look forward to the next go-round there on February 16th.
Then the following Sunday was a nice time at Cuchara Chapel for service. Reverend Eileen gave a great message on dealing with conflict, and I got to sing the Kieran Kane and Kevin Welch song, “I Can’t Wait.”
What’s up this week?
Friday night 6-9 I’m back at Bistoro in Pueblo. I’m meeting some new folks here as well as good friends going out for a fun night of food, company, and music. Come on out if you can. Joette and Pellumb have some yummy new items on the menu that I really want to try!
Sunday night 7-8ish MST is my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert. I’m up against the Super Bowl, but I’ve heard there are quite a few folks who’d rather not watch the Patriots in the Super Bowl again, so if you’re one of them or if the game has turned sour by the time I start, then please tune in to concertwindow.com/tommunch for an hour or so of music from my home to yours.

Empathy
I was at a couple parties interacting with folks yesterday, and I was reading the room and getting to know people as I was talking to them. I was amazed at the variety of experiences people had. And then I was reading a friend’s life story this morning. The places he’d traveled and the things he’d seen were simply amazing - sorrows and joys. We never know what another person has gone through and what they know. We tend to think everyone has the same experience as us, but everyone has had their own troubles and triumphs. Taking care in knowing we’ve all had a life that has shaped us in our own ways on this journey should guide us in our every interaction. I’m fascinated to know what others have gone through in their lives. I feel a oneness with everyone ultimately, but I know they have faced their own set of circumstances to make them who they are today. I will try to keep this in mind as I go through my day. I appreciate you, my friend.

Cuchara Chapel had to cancel the service last Sunday because the snow was already 17” by Saturday noon with no end in sight. I think they had at least 30” by the end of it. That worked out okay because I wound up with a cold and fever that knocked me out from late Monday to part of Thursday. I also picked up an anniversary party on Sunday afternoon that would have been difficult timing if I would have had to rush back from Cuchara. It’s amazing how everything works together.
What am I up to this week?

What Causes Illness?
I went to bed after my online concert last night feeling a little chilled and a little sniffly, and it made me think once again about what causes illness. I read and listen to a lot of different science news and studies, and so I know a bit about the mechanics of illness. But I also know from the studies that there is a component of illness that is in the mind and spirit as well. We can make ourselves sick from stress or a host of other things in our lives that make our immune systems weaker and more susceptible to whatever bug is hanging around. Our world is full of examples of those who made themselves sick and those who made themselves well. Eating well, exercising, and getting good rest are very important, and sometimes supplements seem to help too. But our outlook on life and how we deal with stress is worth bearing in mind as well. So when I feel a little puny my curiosity is always spurred to know what caused it in me this time. Just a little food for thought this morning. I wonder what the next study will add to our knowledge of this.
What have I been up to?
New Year’s Eve at La Plaza Inn was a wonderful time. The trip down was a little spooky with slick roads and folks in the ditch on both sides, but once I was there I was greeted by kind people who knew how to make the holidays special. The food was great, the decorations were beautiful, and the music and fun were flowing.
Friday at Bistoro was grand as well with good food, old and new friends, and a warm feeling with the music that couldn’t be beat. I love these folks and this place!
Sunday for my online concert I did some old country and western songs from the beginnings of country music. I didn’t know if folks would like this choice of music, but they really did. I like doing different things, and these songs are close to my heart.
What am I up to this week?
This week will be relatively quiet with mostly my normal nursing and retirement schedule 2 or 3 gigs a day which I thoroughly enjoy. It’s great to give back to the community.
Sunday 10-11 I’ll be playing at the Cuchara Chapel service again. I’ve really been enjoying the folks and message at the chapel, and I’d encourage you to come up for a mountain outing and a nice uplifting message to start your week if you can.

End of Year Thanks
I’m looking back like everyone does as I approach this New Year’s Eve. This year has been fairly good. I got to see a lot of friends and family, and I got to play in some beautiful places for some wonderful folks. Of course, the fires in the forest around here put a damper on several places I would have played, and I’m so sorry to those who lost so much. Life will always keep us guessing and appreciating what he have - including each other. I had a couple health issues which made life a little interesting for a while - nothing serious, just growing older. Our pets kept us active and happy. My writing went well, and I’ll be ready for the studio this fall. I also love writing these blogs for you all. Through it all this life continues to be an adventure of living and loving that is beyond great. Yes, there are grey moments mixed in, but I’m glad I came, and I’m glad to have you alongside for the ride.

Christmas was a wonderful time with family and good food and drink. (Thanks, Jim and Karen!) I hope yours was too.
Saturday was a private 85th birthday party with several model railroaders, so I got to dive into some of my favorite train songs. Happy Birthday, Charlie!

Christmas Reflections
This Christmas season has me reflecting more than normal. I find myself awash in all kinds of memories as I perform at different places. I share stories with the songs, and I find myself in so many déjà vu moments until I don’t know what’s current and what’s a memory. It’s confusing and yet intoxicating all at the same time. It’s a really unique frame of mind. The familiarity with the songs after performing them thousands of times is almost like playing in a dream as I watch my fingers follow the familiar patterns, and I find myself floating down a river of song. It’s really quite amazing to experience. On top of this I feel such a joy in these songs and sharing them with others who also know them so well. I can’t think of another phenomenon in our world that’s quite the same. So as I reflect on this season I extend a “Merry Christmas!” to you wherever you may be. May you find peace and joy in your heart at this most special time.
What have I been up to?
I had private parties the week before last on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I really enjoyed all of these. It’s a gift to spread Christmas cheer.
Then that Friday was my Christmas concert at the Merc in La Veta. This was a very special evening with friends old and new. It was just a stellar night all around. Thank you to everyone who made it such a success.
Finally, that Sunday was the Cuchara Chapel service that I learned a couple wonderful Christmas songs for - “Love Came Down at Christmas” and “Stables.” They’re having Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve services that will be sweet too.

The Good Stuff
I’m thinking about choices this morning. When I was playing my Christmas show at Littleton Museum last night I started thinking about what songs I was choosing and what stories I was telling. I also thought of conversations I had during the day. I’m the kind of person who believes in going with the flow. I’ve always thought that people come into your day for a reason, and flowing with the variables of each day is part of the interwoven web of life that we each participate in. While this is true, my choices within these moments are my own, and they are an expression of who I am at my essence and what I value in life. Often I have to stop and remember that I value love and caring in this life, and this makes me choose the good stuff - the stuff that uplifts others and makes the world a better place. It only takes an instant in the choosing, but it can mean a lifetime in the differences it makes as it plays out in the world. So as I choose songs and tell stories onstage and in my day I will always try to pick the good stuff. This is my vow.

My private parties Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday were all different with different folks and different opportunities to spread some Christmas cheer. It was so good to see these folks and play some songs.
Friday at Bistoro in Pueblo was packed and so much fun. Joette (one of the owners) was out with a bug, but the food was great as ever, and it was so good to share the space with such good friends - old and new.
Sunday was the holiday celebration at the Littleton Museum I mentioned above, and I thoroughly enjoyed sharing the holiday songs - especially with the little ones who light up with joy and wonder at the season.

Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday I have more private parties at facilities and with friends. I really enjoy these and am grateful to have them.
Friday I’m playing a big concert at La Veta Mercantile 7-9. This will be a blast playing holiday favorites for all my friends and fans in the La Veta area. Tickets are available at La Veta Mercantile $15 in advance or $18 at the door. Please come if you can.
Sunday I’m playing for the Cuchara Chapel service again - 10:00. I have some wonderful songs worked up for this service, and it should be a great celebration of the season. Sound and Space
I played a concert in the Bell Tower Cultural Center in Florence last Saturday, and it made me think about how sound works in our world. Sound affects everything it touches. On a molecular level it interacts with wood and stone and even our bodies. In an old building like the Bell Tower, which was a Baptist church, the vibrations have altered what began as an acoustic space in wonderful ways. When performing in a space like this it seems that the music I produce excites all these sonic memories and resonances in the building and creates even more sound and emotion. It’s a thrill to play in a space like this where every note is a give-and-take with the space. I play a note with gusto and wait to hear the musical response from the walls and ceiling. It's quite the experience. I know I tend to emphasize the minute details of life, but I find the essence of life in these details. There is beauty everywhere.
What have I been up to?
Saturday’s concert at the Bell Tower in Florence was great fun. I wrote about it in the paragraph above. Such kind and generous folks came out for the evening, and the Christmas spirit was really flowing.
Sunday my online concert at my brother's house in Taos was a thrill. I had a live audience of friends in the beautiful adobe room, and I think we did the season proud.

This week will be the super-busy week for this Christmas season. I have 5 events.
Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday I have private Christmas parties for some wonderful folks. I really enjoy playing at these events, and I expect there will plenty of Christmas cheer to go around. Maybe I’ll see you at one of them.

Thanksgiving Sunrise
I posted an album of pictures on Facebook on Thanksgiving of the unbelievable sunrise I experienced that morning. You may have seen the album or a picture if you follow me on Facebook or Twitter. It really moved me. From the moment I walked out of the house with our dog Beau I could see that it would be special. We walked south on the path, and the sky was full of interesting clouds and an orange and yellow glow was already appearing on the horizon. As we got down to the end of our road on the path the clouds above me were starting to morph from grey to pink. There was a bright star or planet winking through those clouds. Then as we crossed the field to the next road the pink continued to creep across the clouds. Crossing the road and greeting the neighbor and his dogs in their yard, we marveled in the cold at how the scene just kept getting more vibrant and was changing by the minute. I remarked at how I felt drawn right up into the sky and the cosmos. I felt like my heart would burst. Then rounding the corner and heading to the east the orange and red intensified as the pink grew higher and higher into the sky above and to the sides - painting the mountains with a faint rose. As we progressed to the corner heading back south I looked to the west to see streaks of pink in the clouds like a fire lifting from the mountains. At this point I felt so energized and alive. Even Beau watched the light with wonder. As we turned south and then west the pink built and then began to fade fairly quickly to a muted grey as the sun began to wink over the horizon. We turned back north for home, and now the clouds to the east were bright white as the ball of the sun climbed through the yellow glow to make its appearance. It was quite an experience. When I got home I spent some time looking at the pictures I had taken and reliving the beauty. After a little while I picked up a guitar and tried to express what I had seen in music. The result is a new song called “Thanksgiving Sunrise.” I’ll try to play it at my online concert this Sunday. I just wanted to share the experience with you. What have I been up to?
Last Wednesday’s Tree Lighting at the Pueblo Zoo was really fun. We had a good crowd of families and friends ready to see the ElectriCriiters and check out the gingerbread house contest.
Thanksgiving was lots of family and food with good conversation and laughter. I hope yours was too.
Sunday playing for Cuchara Chapel was fun too. I played my new “Thanksgiving Sunrise” song with my slideshow of the pictures, and several good friends came. We even did a gospel-style “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” sing-along with suggestions from the congregation.

Saturday 7-9 I’m playing a very special Christmas concert at the Bell Tower Cultural Center in Florence, CO. I have played several concerts at the wonderful Bell Tower, but this is the first time I’ve played for Christmas. Beings that it’s in an old church I’ll bet there are some great Christmas vibes there, and I expect it will be an amazing time. Tickets are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Sunday 7- 8ish MDT I’m doing my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert from my brother's living room in Taos with a live audience of friends. Season for Caring
Well, the holiday season is upon us. I’m taking stock of my feelings today as I approach the season. I usually have to pace myself and not get into the spirit too soon. I’m still a sucker for all things Christmas even after all these years. It probably suits me well since I love Christmas songs and love getting to sing them for people every day and watch the songs work their magic on hearts all around. It really is a chance to show caring for others in an even bigger way than we do all year long. This can be tough financially, but it doesn’t cost anything to let go of some meanness that may creep into your life and replace it with a caring spirit. It really helps us all when we care for even just one more person out there. So give it a try and see if it doesn’t help your holiday spirit and the greater world. We all need each other, and this season is a great excuse for caring for others.
What have I been up to?
I haven’t been playing out as much as during the summer. This gives me a chance to catch up on all that stuff I said I’d do when things slow down. It also gives me time to spend with family which is always good.
My monthly online concert was great fun as always. I did some very different songs, I think, and it felt good to branch out a little from my usual fare.
I didn’t play at Cuchara Chapel that week on Sunday because we had a pretty big snow storm blow through, and the roads in that direction turned to ice and packed snow in a hurry. I did get out in it a little to have a rehearsal for a Veterans Day show in Walsenburg on Monday that went really well. We stuck to patriotic songs this year which was a little heavy but honorable.
What am I up to this week?
Wednesday 5:30-6:30 I’m playing for the Tree Lighting Ceremony and Gingerbread House Contest at the Pueblo Zoo. I did this for the first time last year, and it was a blast! The zoo folks are such good people, and it’s really gratifying to be involved in such a happy event. There’ll be hot cocoa, adult beverages, and more. Come on out if you can. Chapters
Fall is always a wonderful time of year - the crisper days, the beautiful leaves, and the general slowdown of life is always a welcome change, but it also brings about a change of chapters that is sometimes hard to deal with. For me it slows down my work in radical ways. I’m sure if you read my regular missives you see that I don’t have as many gigs to share, and sometimes I don’t post and mail weekly at these times. Usually I see this as an opportunity to get to those things I put off during the summer, but this change of chapters sometimes puts me in a little bit of a funk too. I really enjoy seeing friends and being on the go, and my budget gets a little tighter. Life is just more fulfilling when we’re fully engaging. So I start the next chapter and adjust my activity and mindset with a little angst and a little love. And I always appease myself by trying to rise above and look at the view from 40,000 feet. That’s when I remember that we’re all in this together and my life is not that different than everyone else. If I keep creating and giving what I have to give then it will all work out. It’s just another chapter.
What have I been up to?
Friday at Bistoro was a really cool night of old and new faces. The food was fantastic, and I really enjoyed pulling out some musical gems. I think Bistoro will be a nice musical home.
Saturday the St. Jude fundraiser at CaT's Pourhouse was very successful and a lot of fun. I got to feed the energy of the room with some cool old songs, and many children should be helped by our efforts.

Monday at 7:00 MST I’m doing my monthly online living room concert. I have a few requests, and I’m planning some other fun surprises. Please tune in if you can.
