What Does the New Year Mean?

We've just finished the first full week of the new year. Usually I'd be feverishly planning my year and coming up with cool ideas for the spring and summer. But I'm feeling differently about the year this time around. Part of that is because I know I can't make big commitments until I've finished settling my mom's estate. Part of that is because I've had a change of motivation - kind of. What do I mean? I've always had a burning passion to be on the path to somewhere - not really knowing where that was, but I'm now a little more content to be where I am. I'm not sure how to really make that clear. Maybe it's age, but I'm realizing that enjoying the place on the journey is as important as not only the destination, but also the journey itself. That's a little twist on what I've always accepted - that the journey was more important than the destination. Now I see that a point on the journey is very worthwhile as well. I've always loved Tolkien's Hobbit books, and part of that is because he was not afraid to let his characters stop along the way for an extended stay. I can see real value in that now, and I'm ready to explore and enjoy.

What all happened since I last wrote?

I had a pretty good holiday season - playing for a few special events as well as a really enjoyable sing-along at Magpies a few weeks ago. It was great to see family and enjoy some traditions - especially since it was the first year my mom wasn't part of it.

What's up for this week?

Friday I'm back at Magpies to start the new year. I haven't decided what kind of music to do, but I'm itching to do some old standards and some folk music, so maybe that will be the theme. Whatever it ends up being, it will be a grand time, so please come out if you can.

Saturday I have a wedding for a woman that I met when she was a little girl, and I'm really looking forward to playing for her and her family. I'm even doing an instrumental version of Kansas' "Carry On"!

That's it for this week. Hope your new year is starting out great!

Best always,

Tom
