Memorial Day Connectedness

I’m thinking today about how we interact with each other. It’s Memorial Day as I write this, and as I think of those who have fallen and the causes for war, I think of what large forces drive disagreement and conflict. I often say that if only we people were aware of how connected we are we wouldn’t be so inconsiderate of each other. I believe this connection is down to a quantum and spiritual level, but even on the surface our actions and attitudes touch everyone around us. This comes home to me as well. For example, If I don’t maintain my awareness behind the wheel I can be a very aggressive and intolerant driver. I’m aware of those around me on the road, and I try not to be impatient, but I also have high expectations about my fellow-drivers’ awareness and courtesy. This doesn’t feel like how I’d like to be. In a connected and aware world we would give preference to each other and have understanding of what each other may be going through in our day. And it’s easy to let these intolerances bleed into many aspects of daily life. Hating is easy; loving takes work. We wouldn’t have to have Memorial Day if we knew how connected we really are. I’m mourning the fallen.

What have I been up to?

I played for the early-development dancers (young children) dance recital at Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center a week ago Sunday, and it was a very sweet time. The kids are so cute as they discover movement and music in their young bodies, and it was a joy to play the music for them to dance to. I hope to do more of this next Fall.

What am I up to this week?

Sunday at 7:00 MDT is my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert again. I so look forward to these evenings connecting with friends all over the country. I haven’t picked a theme yet. I tend to lean on summer favorites as the summer expectation builds. Please tune in if you can - concertwindow.com/tommunch.

Next Monday 12:30-4:30 I’ll be playing at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills on bass at the big stage on the south side. I’ve never played on the big stage there, and I’m looking forward to seeing and hearing how it feels, and Dennis and I will be playing a lot of different material we haven’t done together. If you’ve never heard me play with Dennis, he played with me in the trio we formed with Trudy Howard a few years back to play at parties and events in La Veta and Cuchara. He’s a great bass played and singer with roots in the Texas rock music scene going back to the Nightcaps. Come on out if you haven’t seen the Gorge in a while and would like some sunny music!

That’s it for this week. Next week really starts the busy season for me. I’m not as booked up as I have been in some summers past, but I’ll be plenty busy. I’d love to see you if you’re out and about this summer. My full schedule is on my website - http://tommunch.com/calendar. I have some dates with conflicting events on there because I haven’t moved all my facilities around yet.

Best always,

Tom

Excitement of Summer

Just a brief note today as I rush headlong into the summer season.  I’m busy writing out music and rehearsing and recording demos for bandmates.  It’s fun to be fully engaged and moving expectantly toward the busy season.  I always find this to be an exciting time of anticipation and energy.  I hope you are feeling it too.  Sure, there’s a ton of work ahead, but it’s invigorating and fun!

What have I been up to?

Cuchara Chapel last Sunday was a wonderful celebration of Mother’s Day.  I sang my mother’s favorite song - “Always” -  for chapel, and it was such a warm way to reflect on motherhood.  Rev Eileen gave a wonderful message as well that included “The Four Agreements” which is one of my favorite books - especially the introduction.  I highly recommend it.

What am I up to this week?

Sunday I’m playing for a children’s dance recital for a good friend at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center.  I’ve known Katie and her husband Jake since well before their wedding several years ago, and Katie is now a dance instructor at the Arts Center.  It’s a pleasure to get to help out with these youngsters as they learn about body movement and stage presence.  Between learning music, rehearsals, and performance this will take up much of my week.  I’m looking forward to it!

That’s it for this week.  There’s so much coming up, and my summer schedule is still coming together.  Check my calendar at http://tommunch.com/calendar to see when I’ll be in your neighborhood.  There are some overlapping events you might find there as I am still moving around some of my nursing facilities to accommodate my summer gigs.

Best always,

Tom

Summertime Is Coming

We worked on getting our drip system and sprinklers up all day today (Sunday) before taking a shower and getting ready for my online concert. (I’ll reflect on the concert below after I finish.) We have a lot of drip system running all around our property to trees and shrubs, and then a decent-size front and back yard with an old sprinkler system that usually has leaks to be fixed every spring when we turn it on. It’s always a lot of work getting everything set up and then trimming trees and suckers and planting grass. In addition, all summer there are early mornings after walking Beau when I’ll chop weeds and fix road after we have big rains. And there are other things to be busying our time with getting ready for summer. I’m learning and rehearsing songs and practicing guitar to be ready for my summer duo gigs at the Royal Gorge Bridge with my friend Dennis Mills, who’ll be playing bass and singing with me Mondays and some Tuesdays and other days on the big stage on the south side. Plus there are many other gigs and things to get ready for. This is always an exciting time of year! And it seems like the years roll around more quickly as they go by. I don’t mind. It’s all part of the experience in this life. And finally this Sunday I’ll be thinking of my mom and all moms. The relationships we have with our parents are so precious, and the memories grow sweeter as time goes by even after they pass. Enjoy this beautiful time as the season ramps up to the frenetic summer.

What have I been up to?

Last Friday was a very nice time at Bistoro. So many folks came out to join in. So fine!

Sunday was my first-Sunday online show. I somehow messed up so that it charged folks and kicked some off. One day I’ll figure it out. We had fun though with an interesting mix of songs.

What am I up to this week?

Sunday 10-11 I’m playing for Cuchara Chapel services and Mother’s Day. I always enjoy these mornings in this beautiful and rustic chapel, and I’d love to have you if you’re up for a special morning in the mountains. The Timbers in Cuchara should be open for a yummy lunch/brunch afterwards.

——

That’s it for this week. Have a wonderful Mother’s Day, and enjoy this last breath of Spring before the summer starts.

Best always,

Tom
