Mother

Mother’s Day is this Sunday.  With the virus going on it’s easy to lose track of time and regular holidays, so I’m wanting to especially think about Mother’s Day.  I’m even working on a mother song to record for the virtual service at Cuchara Chapel this Sunday.   I lost my mom 5 years ago after she turned 90.  You might remember because I wrote about it quite a bit.  It wasn’t as traumatic for me as I thought it might be.  The part that was bad was settling her estate.  She had accumulated a lot of stuff that took a year with my siblings to go through and distribute/get rid of.  But through it all it was an experience of thinking about her and my dad who had passed ten years earlier.  That was a good thing.  We also got to share a lot of stories of what she was like as we were growing up, and how our relationships to her had changed as we became adults and parents as well.  Mothers have intuition and loving sense that goes beyond understanding.  Even with their own personalities they become part of a phenomenon of unspoken wonder and compassion for their children and their needs.  They can feel when a child is in turmoil, and they know the right thing to say to calm little minds when things seem topsy-turvy.  With a look they can scold or encourage in a way that children instantly understand.  They can forgive a child who is acting up - knowing that knowledge and maturity will come in time, and they have patience and love even when they’re seething under their breath for a child who has done the same dumb thing over and over.  (I know that some of you mothers are laughing at me right now with my naive manly words.). But I honor my mother and all women who take the path of motherhood.  You are appreciated and loved.

What have I been up to?

Last week I recorded a bunch more songs that I posted on my YouTube Tom Munch Public Domain Songs channel.  I don’t know if people are taking advantage of this channel.  Most of my comments are from people I don’t know, but I’m making an effort.  If you know anyone who would like some free entertainment with some old favorite songs, please send them my way - youtube.com/channel/UCLYdZkZ0isWlc9wv1QsKutQ/.

Friday evening I played on my Facebook business page and the Bistoro page for a couple hours to help promote Bistoro and their wonderful food and friendship.  It was a fun night although they didn’t get as much business from it as I had hoped.  I did the show from my desktop computer which wasn’t as good a quality of sound and picture as I’m used to.  That was the only way to have it broadcast on two pages at once.

Sunday was my Facebook Live weekly concert, and it was a blast with lots of requests and good friends from all over.  It’s so much fun to see so many friends from over my whole life all gathered and getting to know each other a bit.  I did some new tunes and old tunes, and I also took a bunch more requests for future shows.

What am I up to this week?

I’m working on recording some more public domain songs like I mentioned above.  I hope to have about 150 songs posted eventually.

I think I have one online concert for one of my senior facilities this week.

I’ll also be recording a mini-concert for Mother’s Day to be part of this week’s Cuchara Chapel service on Sunday.  I may post this on Facebook as well although it may overlap some of the songs I’ll do on my Sunday Facebook Live show.  I figure that some of you would like to see this, and it won’t be publicly available.

Sunday evening 7-8:15 mountain time will be my weekly Facebook Live Concert.  I haven’t picked a theme, but you know I have requests I’m always working on, and I’ll definitely do a couple songs for mothers as well.  These concerts are so comforting to me, and the folks who listen say the same thing.  If you think it’s something you’d like, please tune in - facebook.com/tom.munch and tommunch.com/photos-videos.

What do I have coming up?

I’m toying with the idea of doing some sort of a 6 or 8-hour marathon concert - probably as a fundraiser for Feeding America.  This feels like something I’d really like to contribute, and it would allow me to do requests for anyone tuned in without  time limit.  I have to work out some details with how to do the payment so there’s no doubt where the money is going, and I don’t want folks who are struggling to get by or who have already given to feel obligated to give more because they’re a friend listening to the concert.  More on this as I learn more.

Also my “Back to the Old Country” album is in production now, and I think it may be ready earlier than the first estimate of May 18-25.  I’ll let you know as I know.

I found out last week that the Yellow Pine will not be doing the weekly barbecue this summer.  It’s just too hard to set up for social distancing in the old barn, so we’ll take a year off and hope for better conditions next summer.  I know there were a lot of folks hoping to return to normal - especially after we lost much of the summer with the fires just two years ago.

That’s it for this week.  I know it seems like a lot, and I’m definitely not on my regular busy schedule.  Please stay safe and have patience.  One of the articles I saw recently said we are probably just in the second inning of this virus, so we have a long way to go.  Know that you are loved and missed.

Best always,

Tom
