End of Year Thanks

I’m looking back like everyone does as I approach this New Year’s Eve. This year has been fairly good. I got to see a lot of friends and family, and I got to play in some beautiful places for some wonderful folks. Of course, the fires in the forest around here put a damper on several places I would have played, and I’m so sorry to those who lost so much. Life will always keep us guessing and appreciating what he have - including each other. I had a couple health issues which made life a little interesting for a while - nothing serious, just growing older. Our pets kept us active and happy. My writing went well, and I’ll be ready for the studio this fall.  I also love writing these blogs for you all. Through it all this life continues to be an adventure of living and loving that is beyond great. Yes, there are grey moments mixed in, but I’m glad I came, and I’m glad to have you alongside for the ride.

What have I been up to?

Christmas was a wonderful time with family and good food and drink. (Thanks, Jim and Karen!) I hope yours was too.

Saturday was a private 85th birthday party with several model railroaders, so I got to dive into some of my favorite train songs. Happy Birthday, Charlie!

What am I up this week?

Tonight (Monday) 6-9 I’ll be playing at La Plaza Inn in Walsenburg for New Year’s Eve dinner. The weather looks like it will be a challenge down south, so I’m in hopes that everyone’s travel will be safe. If you’d like to come please call 719-738-5700 for a reservation. It’s sounds like a wonderful evening.

Friday 6-9 I’m at Bistoro in Pueblo for first-Friday dinner. I’m looking forward to starting the new year with good food and good friends. Please come out and enjoy the energy of the new year. Call 719-299-4769 for reservations.

Sunday 7-8ish I’ll be doing my first-Friday online living room concert once again. I’ll be starting the year with favorites that I hope everyone loves. Please tune in to concertwindow.com/tommunch if you can.

That’s it for this week. I hope you had a good year and are looking forward to ringing in the new with excitement and joy.

Best always,

Tom

Christmas Reflections

This Christmas season has me reflecting more than normal. I find myself awash in all kinds of memories as I perform at different places. I share stories with the songs, and I find myself in so many déjà vu moments until I don’t know what’s current and what’s a memory. It’s confusing and yet intoxicating all at the same time. It’s a really unique frame of mind. The familiarity with the songs after performing them thousands of times is almost like playing in a dream as I watch my fingers follow the familiar patterns, and I find myself floating down a river of song. It’s really quite amazing to experience. On top of this I feel such a joy in these songs and sharing them with others who also know them so well. I can’t think of another phenomenon in our world that’s quite the same. So as I reflect on this season I extend a “Merry Christmas!” to you wherever you may be. May you find peace and joy in your heart at this most special time.

What have I been up to?

I had private parties the week before last on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. I really enjoyed all of these. It’s a gift to spread Christmas cheer.

Then that Friday was my Christmas concert at the Merc in La Veta. This was a very special evening with friends old and new. It was just a stellar night all around. Thank you to everyone who made it such a success.

Finally, that Sunday was the Cuchara Chapel service that I learned a couple wonderful Christmas songs for - “Love Came Down at Christmas” and “Stables.” They’re having Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve services that will be sweet too.

What am I up to this week?

Saturday I have a private party for some nice folks that should be fun. They’ve picked out a great selection of songs.

Next Monday 6-9 for New Year’s Eve I’ll be playing for dinner at La Plaza Inn in Walsenburg. This is a beautiful historic inn where they really decorate beautifully for the holidays. The menu looks scrumptious, and this will be a night to remember. I’d love to have you there! Seating is limited, so call right away 719-738-5700 for reservations.

That’s it for this week. Have a wonderful Christmas!

Best always,

Tom

The Good Stuff

I’m thinking about choices this morning. When I was playing my Christmas show at Littleton Museum last night I started thinking about what songs I was choosing and what stories I was telling. I also thought of conversations I had during the day. I’m the kind of person who believes in going with the flow. I’ve always thought that people come into your day for a reason, and flowing with the variables of each day is part of the interwoven web of life that we each participate in. While this is true, my choices within these moments are my own, and they are an expression of who I am at my essence and what I value in life. Often I have to stop and remember that I value love and caring in this life, and this makes me choose the good stuff - the stuff that uplifts others and makes the world a better place. It only takes an instant in the choosing, but it can mean a lifetime in the differences it makes as it plays out in the world. So as I choose songs and tell stories onstage and in my day I will always try to pick the good stuff. This is my vow.

What have I been up to?

Last week was a whirlwind.

My private parties Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday were all different with different folks and different opportunities to spread some Christmas cheer.  It was so good to see these folks and play some songs.

Friday at Bistoro in Pueblo was packed and so much fun.  Joette (one of the owners) was out with a bug, but the food was great as ever, and it was so good to share the space with such good friends - old and new.

Sunday was the holiday celebration at the Littleton Museum I mentioned above, and I thoroughly enjoyed sharing the holiday songs - especially with the little ones who light up with joy and wonder at the season.

What am I up to this week?

Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday I have more private parties at facilities and with friends.  I really enjoy these and am grateful to have them.

Friday I’m playing a big concert at La Veta Mercantile 7-9.  This will be a blast playing holiday favorites for all my friends and fans in the La Veta area.  Tickets are available at La Veta Mercantile $15 in advance or $18 at the door.  Please come if you can.

Sunday I’m playing for the Cuchara Chapel service again - 10:00.  I have some wonderful songs worked up for this service, and it should be a great celebration of the season.  Please come out if you’d like to see the gorgeous mountains in all their winter splendor with inspiration from the service and the music.

That’s it for this week.  I just picked up a New Year’s Eve dinner gig at La Plaza Inn in Walsenburg 6-9.  If you’re in the area and would like an earlier evening or place to go for dinner before the party come on out.  It’s a really nice place!  I hope you’re enjoying the Christmas season.  Wish me luck getting my Christmas cards out and presents purchased.

Best always,

Tom

Sound and Space

I played a concert in the Bell Tower Cultural Center in Florence last Saturday, and it made me think about how sound works in our world. Sound affects everything it touches. On a molecular level it interacts with wood and stone and even our bodies. In an old building like the Bell Tower, which was a Baptist church, the vibrations have altered what began as an acoustic space in wonderful ways. When performing in a space like this it seems that the music I produce excites all these sonic memories and resonances in the building and creates even more sound and emotion. It’s a thrill to play in a space like this where every note is a give-and-take with the space. I play a note with gusto and wait to hear the musical response from the walls and ceiling. It's quite the experience. I know I tend to emphasize the minute details of life, but I find the essence of life in these details.  There is beauty everywhere.

What have I been up to?

Saturday’s concert at the Bell Tower in Florence was great fun. I wrote about it in the paragraph above. Such kind and generous folks came out for the evening, and the Christmas spirit was really flowing.

Sunday my online concert at my brother's house in Taos was a thrill. I had a live audience of friends in the beautiful adobe room, and I think we did the season proud.

What am I up to this week?

This week will be the super-busy week for this Christmas season.  I have 5 events.

Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday I have private Christmas parties for some wonderful folks.  I really enjoy playing at these events, and I expect there will plenty of Christmas cheer to go around.  Maybe I’ll see you at one of them.

Friday 6-9 I am back at Bistoro for a special evening of holiday friendship and great food.  Joette and Pellumb and the staff really know how to create a festive atmosphere, and I’m looking forward to this evening.  Please come out if you can.  https://www.facebook.com/events/273092440068877/

Sunday 5:30-8 I’m in Littleton to play for the Littleton Museum’s Holiday Evening 2018.  If you’re in the Denver area please come out for a fun evening of apple cider, cinnamon, cookies, and hay rides on the beautiful museum grounds.  Bundle up.  I’m outdoors by one of the barns with a big bonfire and loads of holiday fun.  More details on their Facebook event page - https://www.facebook.com/events/279510556012949/

That’s it for this week.  Be good - Santa’s coming!

Best always,

Tom

Thanksgiving Sunrise

I posted an album of pictures on Facebook on Thanksgiving of the unbelievable sunrise I experienced that morning. You may have seen the album or a picture if you follow me on Facebook or Twitter. It really moved me. From the moment I walked out of the house with our dog Beau I could see that it would be special. We walked south on the path, and the sky was full of interesting clouds and an orange and yellow glow was already appearing on the horizon. As we got down to the end of our road on the path the clouds above me were starting to morph from grey to pink. There was a bright star or planet winking through those clouds. Then as we crossed the field to the next road the pink continued to creep across the clouds. Crossing the road and greeting the neighbor and his dogs in their yard, we marveled in the cold at how the scene just kept getting more vibrant and was changing by the minute. I remarked at how I felt drawn right up into the sky and the cosmos. I felt like my heart would burst. Then rounding the corner and heading to the east the orange and red intensified as the pink grew higher and higher into the sky above and to the sides - painting the mountains with a faint rose. As we progressed to the corner heading back south I looked to the west to see streaks of pink in the clouds like a fire lifting from the mountains. At this point I felt so energized and alive. Even Beau watched the light with wonder. As we turned south and then west the pink built and then began to fade fairly quickly to a muted grey as the sun began to wink over the horizon. We turned back north for home, and now the clouds to the east were bright white as the ball of the sun climbed through the yellow glow to make its appearance. It was quite an experience. When I got home I spent some time looking at the pictures I had taken and reliving the beauty. After a little while I picked up a guitar and tried to express what I had seen in music. The result is a new song called “Thanksgiving Sunrise.” I’ll try to play it at my online concert this Sunday. I just wanted to share the experience with you. What have I been up to?

Last Wednesday’s Tree Lighting at the Pueblo Zoo was really fun. We had a good crowd of families and friends ready to see the ElectriCriiters and check out the gingerbread house contest.

Thanksgiving was lots of family and food with good conversation and laughter. I hope yours was too.

Sunday playing for Cuchara Chapel was fun too. I played my new “Thanksgiving Sunrise” song with my slideshow of the pictures, and several good friends came. We even did a gospel-style “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands” sing-along with suggestions from the congregation.

What’s up this week?

Saturday 7-9 I’m playing a very special Christmas concert at the Bell Tower Cultural Center in Florence, CO. I have played several concerts at the wonderful Bell Tower, but this is the first time I’ve played for Christmas. Beings that it’s in an old church I’ll bet there are some great Christmas vibes there, and I expect it will be an amazing time. Tickets are $8 for members and $10 for non-members.   The Facebook event page is here - https://www.facebook.com/events/309687999591956/?ti=ia

Sunday 7- 8ish MDT I’m doing my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert from my brother's living room in Taos with a live audience of friends. My brother and his wife really know how to decorate a house for the holidays, and this will be a beautiful concert full of Christmas cheer. Please tune in if you can. concertwindow.com/tommunch

That’s it for this week. I’m talking to the Pueblo Zoo about doing another concert/sing-along at the zoo the week before Christmas like we did last year. I’ll get back with details about that, and I’ll probably put it on Concert Window too. I also have several other places I’m playing in December - Littleton, La Veta, Pueblo, and Cuchara. It’s an exciting time. Hopefully there will be even more beautiful days with beautiful sunrises.

Best always,

Tom

Season for Caring

Well, the holiday season is upon us.  I’m taking stock of my feelings today as I approach the season.  I usually have to pace myself and not get into the spirit too soon.  I’m still a sucker for all things Christmas even after all these years.  It probably suits me well since I love Christmas songs and love getting to sing them for people every day and watch the songs work their magic on hearts all around.  It really is a chance to show caring for others in an even bigger way than we do all year long.  This can be tough financially, but it doesn’t cost anything to let go of some meanness that may creep into your life and replace it with a caring spirit.  It really helps us all when we care for even just one more person out there.  So give it a try and see if it doesn’t help your holiday spirit and the greater world.  We all need each other, and this season is a great excuse for caring for others.

What have I been up to?

I haven’t been playing out as much as during the summer.  This gives me a chance to catch up on all that stuff I said I’d do when things slow down.  It also gives me time to spend with family which is always good.

My monthly online concert was great fun as always.  I did some very different songs, I think, and it felt good to branch out a little from my usual fare.

I didn’t play at Cuchara Chapel that week on Sunday because we had a pretty big snow storm blow through, and the roads in that direction turned to ice and packed snow in a hurry.  I did get out in it a little to have a rehearsal for a Veterans Day show in Walsenburg on Monday that went really well.  We stuck to patriotic songs this year which was a little heavy but honorable.

What am I up to this week?

Wednesday 5:30-6:30 I’m playing for the Tree Lighting Ceremony and Gingerbread House Contest at the Pueblo Zoo.  I did this for the first time last year, and it was a blast!  The zoo folks are such good people, and it’s really gratifying to be involved in such a happy event.  There’ll be hot cocoa, adult beverages, and more.  Come on out if you can.  Tickets are $10 which also gets you 2 tickets to see the ElectriCritters lighting display.  There’s more info on the evening here - https://www.pueblozoo.org/gingerbread.

Thursday is family and Thanksgiving.  I’m taking the day off.  Hope you can too.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Sunday I’m playing at Cuchara Chapel service 10-11 in Cuchara.  I’m looking forward to it.  Cuchara is beautiful with the recent snowfall, and nothing will put you in the holiday spirit more than a beautiful morning in the mountains with mountain views and inspiration.

That’s it for this week.  I have a bunch of holiday gigs coming up, and I’ve created Facebook events for many of them if you’re a Facebook person.  If not, check out my calendar - http://tommunch.com/calendar.  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and start to the holiday season.  Spread the caring!

Best always,

Tom

Chapters

Fall is always a wonderful time of year - the crisper days, the beautiful leaves, and the general slowdown of life is always a welcome change, but it also brings about a change of chapters that is sometimes hard to deal with. For me it slows down my work in radical ways. I’m sure if you read my regular missives you see that I don’t have as many gigs to share, and sometimes I don’t post and mail weekly at these times. Usually I see this as an opportunity to get to those things I put off during the summer, but this change of chapters sometimes puts me in a little bit of a funk too. I really enjoy seeing friends and being on the go, and my budget gets a little tighter. Life is just more fulfilling when we’re fully engaging. So I start the next chapter and adjust my activity and mindset with a little angst and a little love. And I always appease myself by trying to rise above and look at the view from 40,000 feet. That’s when I remember that we’re all in this together and my life is not that different than everyone else. If I keep creating and giving what I have to give then it will all work out. It’s just another chapter.

What have I been up to?

Friday at Bistoro was a really cool night of old and new faces. The food was fantastic, and I really enjoyed pulling out some musical gems. I think Bistoro will be a nice musical home.

Saturday the St. Jude fundraiser at CaT's Pourhouse was very successful and a lot of fun. I got to feed the energy of the room with some cool old songs, and many children should be helped by our efforts.

What am I up to this week?

Monday at 7:00 MST I’m doing my monthly online living room concert. I have a few requests, and I’m planning some other fun surprises. Please tune in if you can. More and more I’m seeing this as a wonderful way to play for friends all over the globe. It’s a pretty cool thing to be able to do this. Here’s the address - concertwindow.com/tommunch.

Sunday 10-11 I’m playing for the Cuchara Chapel again. They had a pretty good snow at Halloween, so I’m sure it’s beautiful up there. I’m looking forward to it. If you feel like seeing the winter wonderland and beautiful mountain views with a little inspiration, come on out.

That’s it for this week. Things coming up include playing for the Pueblo Zoo treelighting just before Thanksgiving and doing my December online concert live from Taos. Check my calendar for all my other things as well - tommunch.com/calendar.

Best,

Tom

Writing

As I sit writing this note today I’m struck with what writing does for me and my brain. This is both writing things like this note and writing songs. The writing doesn’t always come easy, but it brings an enlivenment of spirit and an alignment of my thoughts. That's a good and rewarding thing for me. Getting in touch with my core and then organizing my inklings into words and sentences is a fundamental part of our existence here on earth. Expressing it to others in words is how we make sense of our world and how we learn to understand each other. Words are often like gems that we can hold up and spin around in the light - marveling at the way they reflect and reveal beauty and truth. And of course they are just one element of the way we express ourselves. There is sound and music, sight and art, touch and sense, and all the other senses and ways we experience our world. But today I celebrate words and ideas and the way we express them in writing.

What have I been up to?

Friday we made a run down to Philmont Scout Ranch to hear a concert by AJ Lee, a fine young bluegrass picker and songwriter, to benefit fire relief for the summer burn areas on Philmont. It was a blast, and we had a jam session afterwards that was equally as rewarding.

Sunday I got to play for church service at the Cuchara Chapel. I’m a little rusty on reading music from a hymnal, but I gave it my best shot, and it was so good to see some of my friends from Cuchara. They’re an exceptionally kind and generous group of folks. I’m trying to play monthly for them, and I’d love it if you’re in the area if you could join in too. Stay tuned for future dates.

What am I up to this week?

Friday 6-9 I’m back at Bistoro for our First-Friday monthly dinner and music. I love these folks so much, and I respect their passion and their excellent food and drink. These nights are always very special and not to be missed. Please come out for a fun evening of great folks and food and a little bit of music and sharing life.

Saturday 1-5 I’m playing for a St. Jude fundraiser at Cat's Pourhouse in Pueblo West. This promises to be a wonderful afternoon of music and fun for a good cause helping children’s cancer research and care. There’ll be a silent auction, raffles and prizes, and lots of my music and support. Please come on out even if you don’t have much to give to support this great cause and enjoy an afternoon together.

Then next Monday 7-8ish I’ll be doing my First-Sunday concert on Monday again for the month. I’m letting you know a week early so you’re not surprised when I talk about it next Monday. I haven’t planned a theme for it, but I’ll come up with something special.

That’s it for this week. I hope you have something fun planned for Halloween. Hopefully the weather will be good for trick-or-treaters in your area. Think I’ll try to write some more today. :-)

Best always,

Tom

Sunrise Inspiration

I’ve been posting sunrise pictures on Facebook almost every day this last week, partly because they’ve been exceptionally beautiful and partly because I’ve been up and out at the right time walking our dog Beau. I’m amazed at how these sunrises have awed me and filled me with wonder and energy. As the sky brightens and I start to see the color progress from the horizon over my head into the clouds, I’m delighted and overjoyed. It’s like my spiritual gas gauge is going from ¼ to full to overflowing almost instantly. It’s almost too much to bear, but it’s so wonderful. On days where I feel a little adrift the beauty grounds me and in turn lifts me into those glorious colorful clouds where I remember my place once again as part of this astounding universe. If you’d like to see some of these photos just click on my Facebook page. Everything I post there is public. https://www.facebook.com/tommunch

What have I been up to?

The Goodnight Barn Dinner yesterday was really fun, and I got to sing all the old cowboy songs and favorites from the West while helping raise money to restore old Charlie Goodnight's barn on the west side of town. It’s a wonderful piece of history that Pueblo is proud to have.

What am I up to this week?

Friday I’m running down to Philmont to hear a great concert with AJ Lee to raise money for Philmont fire relief. I may pitch in with the sound if needed. AJ's a great young California player who’s been gaining fame all around the country.

Sunday I’m starting to play monthly for the Cuchara Chapel services in Cuchara. I know so many of these folks and have loved playing there over the years, so I’m happy to help there this winter. Come on down if you’re in the area or would like to have a beautiful Sunday morning in the mountains with a little inspiration. Service is at 10:00.

That’s it for this week. I have some fun things coming up. You can always check my calendar on my website http://tommunch.com/calendar.

Joy in the Moment

It may surprise you that I am not always the most joyful person. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in whatever is going on in my head and in whatever situation I find myself. But I know better. I can see that there is something amazing in every moment. I can fret over things that distract me or I can smile and find joy in every little thing. This life is so astounding and rewarding when I let it be that way. Every tiny moment holds an infinite number of variables that I can interact with and give to. When I see life this way there is endless opportunity for joy. And joy is infectious and helps us all. So be joyful and express it, my friends.

What have I been up to?

My online concert on Monday a couple weeks ago was great fun. I did several Chuck Pyle songs in preparation for the tribute concert to him and several Fall songs as well to celebrate the season. Many good friends joined in from all over the country.

Friday after that was the big grand opening for Bistoro which was packed and so much fun. It was great to see Joette and Pellumb drinking in their well-earned success.

Saturday the Chuck Pyle tribute in Denver was grand. I can’t say enough about the fine folks I got to play with and spend time. Word is that we'll do it again next year.

Sunday the song swap and further Chuck Pyle celebration in Fort Collins was over the top. Such wonderful musicians and such an appreciative crowd. The only downside was driving three hours home that night in the rain.

Then just last Friday I had a surprise gig at Walter's Brewery in Pueblo. All my regular friends and folks came out for what turned out to be a sweet evening of friendship and music.

What am I up to this week?

Sunday 3-6 I’m playing for the Goodnight Barn Dinner at the Pueblo Union Depot. This is a fundraiser for the restoration of the Charles Goodnight barn west of Pueblo. This is the old stone barn that was built by Charles Goodnight when he lived here in the late 1800's. Charles and his partner Oliver Loving established the Goodnight Loving Trail where they drove cattle up into Colorado from Texas. You may also remember that the story of “Lonesome Dove” was based on their lives. Anyway, it’s a great cause that Pueblo should be proud of, and I’m pleased to be playing for it. If you’d like to come you can purchase tickets at https://www.goodnightbarnpueblo.org/. There’s a Facebook event page about it at https://www.facebook.com/events/2566401930251158/.

That’s it for this week. We got our first snow of the season yesterday, and Beau and I had a chilly but beautiful early walk in it this morning. It was a spectacular (and joyful) time!

How Pain Reflects

I was playing at the Florence Veterans home Friday morning when a couple of the staff members asked my why I looked sad. This hit me out of the blue because I was having a fairly good morning and was enjoying the songs we were sharing. I thought about it for a minute, and the only reason I could think of for looking sad was that I had bit my lip a day or two before and was maybe reflecting the pain from the sore on my lip that I was feeling as I sang. I don’t think very often about how what I am feeling is reflected in my face or demeanor. A friend of mine is very aware of what people are showing on their face, and he has a funny line he likes to use - “If you’re having a good time then tell your face.” I don’t like to think of myself as unaware, but evidently I show pain in unconscious ways. So spread your joy with your face. Smile and show that flicker of love in your eyes that lights up the world.

What have I been up to?

Friday at the Crafty Canary Brewery Grand Opening was crazy fun. It seemed that everyone in Walsenburg came out to celebrate. I can’t wait to go back in the future.

I didn’t have gigs Saturday and Sunday so I could join my siblings in closing up our mountain cabins for the winter. I’m feeling sore today from all the work, but it was wonderful to feel the Fall and spend some time together.

What’s up this week?

Monday 7-8ish is my first-Sunday online concert that I’m playing Monday instead of Sunday as I am playing in Fort Collins on Sunday - more on that in a minute. Please tune in if you can, and log in to comment or send me a text, Facebook message, or email. concertwindow.com/tommunch I love these online concerts.

Friday 6-9 I’m playing the grand open and ribbon cutting for my good friends at Bistoro restaurant in Pueblo. I have a feeling this will be a very special night. They will be having a special menu, and I’m happy to support them and be a part of their wonderful venue. Make a reservation and come on out if you can. 719–696-9672

Saturday 7-9 I’m playing for the Chuck Pyle tribute at Swallow Hill Daniels Hall in Denver. I got to play this last year with many fine musicians and friends, and I’m so happy to be asked to play it once again. If you didn’t know Chuck's music while he was alive, you owe it to yourself to check it out and come down to the concert if you can.

Sunday 3-6 I’m playing a second Chuck Pyle tribute and song swap at Avogadro's Number in Fort Collins. This concert will give several musicians a chance to play our own material in addition to some of Chuck's tunes. I didn’t get to play this last year, and I think it will be a blast. Come on out if you’re in the Fort Collins area on Sunday.

That’s it for this week. Hope you have a pain-free week full of smiles.

Best always,

Tom

Heart Soaring

I spent the weekend in the mountains by Crested Butte, Colorado, for my niece’s wedding, and I have to say that the wild places still make my heart soar just like a kid. It was almost too much! So many beautiful peaks in every direction with such rugged embattlements. It’s hard to pin down exactly why they affect me so much. Without a doubt a childhood spent exploring those wild places had a lot to do with it. I used to explore every summer at our grandparents’ cabins in the mountains. But even though I don’t explore as much nowadays, I still get an ancient thrill when I’m washed over by the beauty and timeless power of such majesty. It’s the same thrill I get when I contemplate the stars and the limitless worlds in the universe. I am part of all of this, and it is my home. Amazing!

What have I been up to?

Senior Safari a couple weeks ago on Wednesday was so much fun. I saw folks from almost every nursing and senior place I sing for, and although it was a very warm day, it was a beautiful time of friendship, food, music, and zoo animals.

The Good Sam’s fall event concert was a blast that Friday in Greeley, and I saw so many old friends and familiar faces.

Then Saturday was great friends and music at the Philmont Philtoberfest in Colorado Springs. I got to pick with some current staffers and share some great food.

Finally, last weekend in Crested Butte for my niece Laura and her beau Josh was beautiful. Big congrats to them! I played for their Saturday night rehearsal dinner and party to a fine group of friends and family. Then Sunday was a gorgeous chair lift to the top of the mountain and a golden hike among the aspens before a wonderful wedding with spectacular views and a few tears and lots of smiles.

What’s up this week?

Friday 6-9 I get to be part of the grand opening of a brand new brewery in Walsenburg called the Crafty Canary. This is a very cool event with some great folks, and I’d be honored to have you there if you like fine beer and my music.

Then my first-Sunday online concert will be moving this month again to the first Monday of October which happens to be next week on the 1st. I’m giving you a heads-up a week ahead in case you miss my reminder next week. Just point your screen to concertwindow.com/tommunch at 7:00 MDT to listen, and you can log in there to comment if you like.

What’s on the horizon?

October 5th 6-9 I get to play for my friends Joette and Pellumb Dhamo at their new restaurant, Bistoro. You’ll recall that they used to have the Neon Alley Bistro in Pueblo, and now they’re ready to start having music at their new location in Central Plaza.

October 6 and 7 I get to play at 2 concerts honoring the late great Chuck Pyle. The 6th is at Swallow Hill in Denver, and the 7th is at Avogadro’s in Fort Collins. These will be beyond fun.

That’s it for this week. Bask in the fall, my friends, and enjoy the changing if the seasons.

Best always,

Tom

Crud

Well, we missed a weekend of fun and relaxation due to the crud. It amazes me how quickly our plans have to be changed when illness steps into our path. I had a cold come and go pretty quickly, but I passed it on and it hit my wife Jen a bit harder, and so we needed to stay at home instead of going to the mountains. I seldom take time off, and it really bothered us to miss this fun weekend. So we binge-watched Matt Groening's “Enchanted” instead, and I did a bunch of yard work that needed to be done. I know that having flexibility and the willingness to do something completely different at the drop of a hat can be very fulfilling. I find that some of my best experiences have come about as a result of spontaneous changes and the way creativity allowed me to enjoy the ride. It’s just too bad it had to come about this time through the crud.

What have I been up to?

Monday's online concert was one of the best-attended ever. I had such a great group of folks out for Labor Day, and I did a little more mellow show than usual.
It was very, very nice.

Thursday was the party at the Yellow Pine, and we had some wonderful folks come out to wind up the season. It’s a good thing we rescheduled for the end of September because it was definitely chilly by the time I packed up around 9:00. I forget how short the season is in the mountains.

What’s up this week?

Wednesday 10:30-2:00 is the annual Senior Safari at the Pueblo Zoo. I’ve been playing for this for many, many years now, and I always look forward to what's grown into a huge event. It’s a free day at the zoo for all seniors with my music, pizza, salad, bingo, great camaraderie, and the wonderful animals and folks at the zoo. I play from 10:30-1:00, and then bingo commences to the end.

Friday I’m playing at a big Good Samaritan’s RV evening in Greeley for folks who I’ve played for many times before. I always love playing for these folks.

Saturday is the annual Philmont Oktoberfest (Philtoberfest) Party at my good Philmont friends' place in Colorado Springs. This isn’t a public party, but I enjoy it so much that I have to mention it.  It’s great to see old friends, celebrate our friendship, and maybe even share a few songs and stories.

That’s it for this week. Next week I’m helping to celebrate my niece's wedding in
Crested Butte, so I won’t have a blog or mailer. Be good to each other, and stay away from the crud. I wish I would have.

Best always,

Tom

Giving

I played a wonderful concert and a wedding reception this past weekend, and the one thing I brought away from both events was giving. I felt myself and others giving without abandon or expectation. It was and is a magical thing. When we open the natural impetus within ourselves to give we become part of the creative flow of all life and existence that makes grass grow and winds blow. It is engaging and fulfilling. Giving makes us a part of each other and a part of the flow. I felt this as I was attempting to take a nap over the weekend, and in between waking and sleeping I fell into a meditative state where I felt myself rising as a ball of light - burning with a sense of purpose and undying energy for this life. That flow of energy makes me want to give and give and give. It’s a wonderful thing.

What have I been up to?

Monday and Tuesday were the last two days of the Royal Gorge Bridge for the season for me, and they were both very good. The crowds are dwindling as the summer ends, but they were such nice people, and the weather was perfect other than a bit of wind on Monday.

Saturday the concert with Ken Saydak was simply a blast. The Merc was packed to the gills, and Ken and I delivered some surprises and some old favorites as well. There was so much love and goodwill in the room.

Sunday evening I played a wedding reception in a Pueblo back yard for a sweet couple and their friends and family. The dancing was beautiful, and the feeling was real and genuine. Congrats, Randall and Savanna!

What am I up to this week?

Monday 7-8ish MDT I'm doing my monthly online living-room concert. (I know, I usually do these on Sunday.) I really love doing these, and I’d love it if you can tune in. Just point your screen to concertwindow.com/tommunch. It’s free, although you can tip if you feel so moved. If you log in you can make comments with everyone else, or if you can’t or don’t want to log in you can send me a message or email with any comments you have.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 is the party I mentioned before for the end of the summer at the Yellow Pine. They decided to move it to the beginning of the month so more folks could be there who will be gone later. Bring your own beverage and an appetizer to share. I’ll be playing music for dancing and enjoyment, and I have a feeling it will turn into a wonderful evening!

What’s up down the road?

I just made an agreement to play first-Fridays at Bistoro restaurant in Pueblo. These are the folks who had the Neon Alley Bistro when I played there, and I’m thrilled to get to play for them again in their new location at 109 Central Plaza.

I’m playing two Chuck Pyle tribute concerts at the beginning of October - the 6th and 7th.

I’ll be playing Christmas concerts at the Bell Tower in Florence December 1st and the Merc in La Veta December 15th.

More details as we get nearer to those dates. My calendar is always up to date on my website too - http://tommunch.com.

I’d better run for now. It’s a rainy day, and I have much to do. Give all you can, folks. It’s the stuff of life.

Best always,

Tom

Common Bonds

I’m putting together a show for this Saturday with Ken Saydak, a renowned piano player and singer living in La Veta who has played all over the world. Ken and I are from different musical backgrounds, or so it would seem, but I find that as we are putting our show together we have so much in common. We both are striving toward the good stuff - the songs that say something meaningful in a genuine way with interesting musical changes and harmonies. We both have a sincere love of good music and good writing. It will be a fine show, I can tell, and I’m looking forward to it.  And it makes me realize that finding things in common with new and old friends is happening more and more every day. It’s easy to bond over common experiences, common backgrounds, common loves even though some people I meet are from different cultures and different parts of the globe. I have always believed that somewhere in our makeup of cosmic dust and energy we are all connected and that science will someday find this in a profound way. It’s gratifying when I see it in my everyday experience in such tangible ways. There is so much more going on than we see, and when we stop long enough to feel it the world is a wondrous place.

What have I been up to?

Monday and Tuesday at the Royal Gorge Bridge were very enjoyable days. Monday was a perfect day with kind people from all over the place. Tuesday was a bit of a mixup. I was not booked to be there, but somehow I still had taken the day off from my other gigs and had the Gorge on my calendar. So I showed up to find someone else on the stage setting up, and then I called the stage coordinator who said I must be supposed to perform on the other side of the bridge on the visitor deck. So I ran over and set up there and had some really kind folks listening as we endured through some spitting rain. A couple hours into the gig I got an email that I wasn’t scheduled to play but that they were happy I was there and would pay me anyway. It’s then that I checked the contract in the cloud and saw that indeed the day was not on the schedule. What can I say? I’m an idiot sometimes. It all worked out for the good, and I met some great folks.

Thursday was the Yellow Pine Barbecue, and it ended up being the last one of the season as we can’t get food from the barbecue folks in Alamosa after last week. We had a stellar group of folks out for the night, and it was a fitting end to a memorable summer with the fire and all the angst and joy that was felt up and down the Cuchara valley. I am so grateful to be part of such a wonderful community up there.

Saturday was the FARmm to Table Fun Run and Dinner at the Abbey Winery in Cañon City, and what a super group of folks were there. I played for the runners and the diners while they ran and enjoyed a beautiful evening with just a couple drops of rain on the gorgeous lawn by the winery. I had some fine friends come from Pueblo West and Castle Rock to be part of the evening.

What’s up this week?

Monday and Tuesday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge for the final week of the season for me, and I’m truly looking forward to these two days. I forget how much I enjoy the views, the mountain air, and the new faces from all over the world at the Gorge. Come join me if you can.

Thursday will not be the Yellow Pine Barbecue. As I said above, we can’t get food for this week, so last week will end up being the grand finale. It’s sad to wrap up the season, but we will do a last hurrah for the summer the last Thursday of September at the Yellow Pine for the locals with BYOB and BYOA (appetizer) that will be a great party.

Saturday 7-9 is the concert with the Ken Saydak at the La Veta Mercantile in La Veta. As I wrote above this show is really coming together nicely to be a grand experience, and I’d love to have you all there. We will do some of the stuff you know each of us for,  but we are both putting our own spin on each other’s music and doing some unique music together as well. It’s going to surprise even us! I can’t wait to have you hear it.

Sunday I won’t be doing my First-Sunday Online Concert because I’m playing a wedding reception that evening that I scheduled many, many months ago, but never fear, the online concert will occur the following night on Labor Day at the same time and place - 7:00 MDT at concertwindow.com/tommunch.

That’s it for this week. The last week of summer is always a little bittersweet, but I have so many fun things planned, and I can’t wait to find more things in common with folks even today at the Gorge. Have a great week, folks!

Best always,

Tom

WYSIWYG

I’m thinking this morning about the games we play in life. At this stage of my life  I’m finding that I don’t want to play games anymore. When I was younger I was all about clever interactions with people and ways I could get my way through sometimes almost deviant manipulation. I know that sounds sinister, but I definitely went through a time where I functioned like that. And at some point I gave it up. It could have been an epiphany of wisdom, or it might have been just laziness since it’s so much work to keep juggling all the balls in the air of different lies and stories. Either way, I find that it’s so much more worthwhile to just give people yourself without all the baggage. I remember a conference I went to a decade ago where I met many people I knew online and had chatted with often. Meeting people in person after knowing them online is an experience where all the conceptions you’ve had about a person gets realized in the flesh. Some people are exactly who you thought they were, and some are totally different.  I remember in the aftermath that one of the folks said that I was exactly “What You See Is What You Get.” (WYSIWYG) I think that’s a great way to live. I don’t know why we ever develop all the layers of complexity in our relationships that we do, but try just being who you are - naked and unafraid - and see where it gets you. At least it’s a more peaceful way to live - and more honest.

What have I been up to?

Monday at the Royal Gorge Bridge was a wonderful day. Jen traveled with me, and I had some really nice folks sit down and listen and interact with me. I even did almost a whole set of Beatles music with folks singing along and cheering.

Thursday at the Yellow Pine Barbecue was a packed house with such enthusiastic friends and beautiful people. It was a treat!

Saturday the rain stopped just in time for a sweet concert at Deerprint
Wine in La Veta. I had so many friends and familiar faces come out. I did a bunch o favorites and even some 60's tunes and a little Aretha Franklin to pay tribute to her. RIP, Aretha.

What’s up this week?

Monday and Tuesday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge on the south side stage. The summer is winding down up there, but I’m still having really good crowds of kind folks and music lovers. I’d love to have you up there if you’re looking for a fun day outdoors.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 I’m at the Yellow Pine once again for the barbecue if we get enough reservations. Last week was such a packed house that I imagine we’ll have a bunch of folks who want to have some tasty barbecue and my music in the old barn at least one more time before the end of summer. It’s such a great tradition. Please call by Tuesday if you’d like to come - 719-742-3528.

Saturday 5ish to 7:30 I’m playing a new event for me. Fremont Adventure Recreation is having a Farm-to-Table 5-mile fun run and dinner at the Winery at Holy Cross Abbey to showcase growers and culinary artists in Cañon City. It’s $30 for the run with dinner and wine pairings or $25 for youth or no wine. I don’t know how close it is to being sold out, so I you'd like to come I’d suggest checking it out ASAP. There’s more info on their website http://www.joinfar.org/farmm-to-table-run.html and on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/events/654182721590876/. It sounds like a great time! Join me if it sounds like fun to you too!

That’s it for this week. I hope your summer has been good.

Best always,

Tom

Connectedness

I played yesterday for a couple chapel services in Cuchara where the topic of the sermon was oneness. One of the examples of oneness that was used was an aspen grove. An aspen grove is many trees that all share the same root system, so in reality they are really all one tree. This is very cool, but it goes even deeper than this example of oneness. The trees actually share a system of fungi with all the other trees and plants of the forest that make them all connected and part of each other. You can listen to a great show about this here on the show, Radiolab - wnycstudios.org/story/from-tree-to-shining-tree/
And it brings about another idea that I have written about before - our connectedness to each other and the world around us. We are connected through the air we breathe, the water we drink, the thoughts we share, and the energy we put out into the universe. And in turn we are connected to the earth below us and the universe all around us through  our very molecules and structure. On every level I can think of, from spirituality to quantum physics to everyday interactions, we are connected to each other in ways that affect everything we do. Give a listen to the show above when you have time (it's fun), and let your mind be opened to the enormity of our connectedness.

What have I been up to?

Monday and Tuesday at the Royal Gorge Bridge were beautiful days with really nice folks coming out for a day of beautiful views.

Thursday at the Yellow Pine barbecue was an evening with a huge family reunion of folks that were really enjoyable. They even got up and sang a medley of family-favorite hymns that wowed us.

Sunday playing for chapel services in Cuchara was a very rewarding time of friendship and memories. I sang an old hymn tha my grandpa taught me called "Murmur." There's a video on YouTube of it here - youtu.be/Gn5sbd-pyds.

What am I up to this week?

Monday I'm at the Royal Gorge Bridge 12:30-4:30 again for what should be a beautiful day. I really enjoy these gorgeous (pun intended) days. Come on up if you can.

Thursday is the Yellow Pine Barbecue 6:30-8:30. This may be the last barbecue of the season if we don't get enough reservations for the next two Thursdays - the 23rd and 30th. If you'd like to come this week make sure you make a reservation by Tuesday so they can order enough food, and if you'd like to come the next two Thursdays please call and make a reservation ASAP - 719-742-3528.

Saturday 6:00-8:00 is a fun concert at Deerprint Wine in La Veta. This is a lovely venue in La Veta, and I've never gotten to play on the outdoor stage before, so I'm really looking forward to it. Tickets can be purchased at https://squareup.com/store/deerprint-wine-and-bistro. I'd love to have you there if you're up for an evening of music and wine under the shadow of the Spanish Peaks. There's more info on their website - deerprintwine.com and on their Facebook page - facebook.com/Deerprint and event page - facebook.com/events/1938692956461166/.

That's it for this week. I'm working on a fun concert on September 1 with a Ken Saydak at the Merc in La Veta, and I have a couple other fun things coming up. I still need to book some fall and winter gigs in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. Stay tuned for those. And my latest album about Love is coming together in my head although I don't have any finished songs yet. My inner hippy is speaking. ;-)

Best always,

Tom

Feeling the Earth

When I walk Beau in the morning I get an intimate feeling for the earth around me. It is something I’ve felt throughout my life when I am in nature. As I walk I feel the hum of energy through my feet from the dirt and the grass as my foot flexes with the undulations on the ground. There is a knowing deep inside me that I am one with the earth and the stars. It’s where I came from and where I someday will return. It’s the connection I feel in music as the harmonic vibrations of the earth or the nourishment from good food from the earth and the sun. It humbles me and also makes me feel powerful as part of this amazing flow of energy. And as you might guess from my tone it’s not tied to any set of teachings, it’s just the way I have always felt. It is a timeless knowing that is revealed to me more and more every year. It’s a great benefit of growing older. And every day I work to meld this knowing with the minutiae of life that sometimes makes me forget myself.

What have I been up to?

Last Monday and Tuesday were wonderful days at the Royal Gorge Bridge. I forgot my mixer on Monday and had to only play instrumental guitar tunes all day. That was a little challenging, but I made it through and actually enjoyed it.

Thursday was a beautiful night at the Yellow Pine. We had some really nice folks out early, and they all left earlier than usual too even though we had a good night. Strange, but fun.

Friday night was the outdoor concert at Lucy’s RV Park in La Veta. It was another beautiful night under the stars (the rain cleared off) where so many good friends gathered to share a special night. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Saturday I played at the Celebrate Aguilar Festival in the morning to some fine new faces in the park after the parade. It was nice to get to know Aguilar a little bit.

Sunday I didn’t end up playing at the Cuchara Chapel for morning services as I had sent out in an additional email, but I’ll be there this week.

Sunday was also my online concert where I did a bunch of favorite tunes I hadn’t played yet online. I had some really great folks tune in and comment.

What am I up to this week?

Monday and Tuesday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge. They’re predicting rain, so it could be a couple of interesting days. I usually really enjoy the rainy days up there as well, but the stage setup is different this year, so I may be really scrambling to stay dry. Come watch the fun!

Thursday 6:30-8:30 I’m back at the Yellow Pine Barbecue. I keep telling you how special these evenings are, and I mean it. I wish you all could experience the barbecue, music, and friendship in the old barn. If you’re interested, call 719-742-3528 by Tuesday to make a reservation for Thursday.

Sunday morning I’ll be playing music before and during the 9:30 and 11:00 services at the Cuchara Chapel in Cuchara. I really like playing gospel and spiritual songs, and I’m honored to get to play for these nice folks in Cuchara.

That’s it for this week. The summer is starting to coast to the end, and kids are starting to head back to school. Summers seem so short anymore. Enjoy it, my friends, and keep your feet in the earth.

Best always,

Tom

Last week was the first week I’ve played back in the Cuchara Valley since the tremendous fire that swept through the area a month ago.  To say it was surreal is an understatement.  Anyone who has been through a cataclysmic event knows the realities of having your life upended and rearranged.  Folks were in limbo for a couple weeks there - not knowing if they would have to evacuate and whether they would have a home when it was all over.  It resets your priorities, and it makes you feel at sea for a long time.  And it gives you abandon to truly enjoy the little and big things of life.  All the events I played had folks feeling joyous and free like I seldom see.  They were so thankful and so united - and they danced and laughed.  It was very heartening, and I felt blessed to be a part of the celebration.  Truly this is the stuff of life - enjoying our time here without fear or worry.  I saw it personally at Philmont and in New Mexico after the fire the month before.  I saw it personally at the Royal Gorge Bridge when the fire swept through there several years ago, and we saw it globally after 9/11.  These events that stop us and put us in limbo are gifts that help us see how life can be lived every day.  Enjoy life, my friend.  It’s why we’re here.

What have I been up to?

Monday at the Royal Gorge Bridge was a lot of fun although it was a little hectic dealing with rain most of the day.  It never really rained hard, but it kept sprinkling off and on, and I tried to set up tarps for protection without much luck.  In the future I’ll just be ready to pack up and go when it rains.

Thursday was a wonderful evening at the Yellow Pine barbecue.  It was good to see the folks and share memories.  I love this place!

Friday was a party played with my friend Dennis Mills on bass and vocals at a house in Cuchara where we partied like there was no tomorrow.  Everyone was so joyous after the fire.  Happy Birthday, Danette!

Saturday was DJ’ing for the La Veta Fire Auxiliary folks.  It was great to see the volunteer firefighters and thank them for there heroic efforts during the fire.  Everyone was in high spirits and full of emotion as we watched the slides of the firefighting and then danced ’til the wee hours.

Sunday was the Feed Store concert in Westcliffe which was really well attended.  I was a little beat up after several busy days and late nights, but I had a great list of songs that carried right up to the end of the show when rain forced us to back into the amphitheater and sing the last song acoustically with great harmonies from the audience gathered ‘round.  Magical!

What’s up this week?

Monday and Tuesday 12:30-4:30  I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge for two afternoons of fun.  I really get to stretch out and do some cool and unexpected tunes as I interact with the tourists rolling through.  Come on out if you’re in the area.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 I’m back at the Yellow Pine Barbecue.  I still haven’t seen all my friends from Cuchara, and I aspect this week will bring even more out to celebrate and enjoy great barbecue in the old barn.  As always call 719-742-3528 for reservations by Tuesday if you want to come.

Friday 6:30-8:00 I’m playing a free concert at I Love Lucy’s RV Park in La Veta.  This is always a very special event on the great little stage at Lucy’s.  Bring a lawn chair and something to drink, and there’ll be popcorn and good music to share!

Saturday 10:30-12:00 I’m playing the Celebrate Aguilar Street Festival and Car Show in Aguilar.  I’ve never played this before, but my friend Sandy Dolak suggested me for this and it looks like it will be a fine event.  Come on out and enjoy the history and town of Aguilar!

Sunday I’m playing music before and also during the services at 9:30 and 11:00 at the Cuchara Chapel.  I always enjoy getting to play spiritual songs and old hymns, and the folks in Cuchara are like family.  Come on out if you can.

Sunday 7:00-8:15ish MDT I’ll be doing my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert at concertwindow.com/tommunch.  I SO enjoy seeing everyone around the country at these online concerts.  It’s my chance to connect with so many who don’t live in the immediate area.  Please tune in if you can.

That’s it for this week.  This is one crazy rollercoaster ride of a summer.

Best always,

Tom

Sincerity

I just got back from a family-filled weekend at my nephew's wedding. It was a beautiful event with near-perfect weather. Throughout the whole weekend what struck me over and over was the thought of sincerity. Everyone at the wedding was so sincere and genuine in their thoughts and expressions to each other. I take this for granted usually because our family has not normally been one for emotional games, but I know this isn’t the way it is in so many places in our lives. From advertising to politics to interactions in everyday life we are always questioning motives and agendas. What a different world it would be if everyone understood that we are here to enjoy life and live it with abandon. What happiness could be had from seeing the big picture that we all are part of each other and can know more joy by helping than by hurting. We get so wrapped up in our lives that we forget who we are and why we are here. I write these words to encourage myself as well. There is more fulfillment in giving than receiving, and there is more peace in sincerity than game-playing.

What have I been up to?

Tuesday and Wednesday were really nice at the Royal Gorge Bridge. I meet such fine folks there, and I even had some old friends celebrating anniversaries who came up. It was marvelous!

Friday and Saturday were wedding celebrations with family and singing and providing sound for the other wonderful musicians, Diana and Teed, who joined in the festivities. It was beautiful. Congrats, Eric and Katie!

What am I up to this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’ll be at the Royal Gorge Bridge. Hopefully it will be fine day although we may get some rain.

Thursday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Yellow Pine for the first barbecue since the fire. I’m SO looking forward to seeing everyone. There will be many hugs and fond greetings. Everyone is so glad to be through such a trial. Come on up of you can, but call by Tuesday for reservations. 719-742-3528

Friday I’m playing a private party in Cuchara with my good friend and bassist, Dennis Mills. It will be a fun and crazy night for sure!

Saturday 6-10 I’m playing and DJ'ing for the La Veta Fire Department Auxiliary fundraiser in Cuchara. It’ll be good to thank the folks who did so much to protect the place that so many love. Come on out for a great time of dancing and sharing!

Sunday 2:00-4:30 I’m playing a free concert in Westcliffe at the Feed Store Amphitheater. I look forward to seeing the folks and playing at this amazing venue each year. If you’ve never been it’s a highlight of my year. It’s such a beautiful park and setting under the Sangre de Cristo mountains. I’d love to have you there.

This is one crazy week. Send me some good juju to keep up my stamina. I’ll be loving it.

I’d better run. I hope to see you soon. As Chuck Pyle said, “Always be sincere - even if you don’t mean it.” Seriously though, be sincere and genuine.  It makes life so much more loving.

Best,

Tom

Frustration and Peace

I’m running like a chicken with its head cut off this morning, but I’ll try to find some peace to write to you.  I often write about finding peace, and as I’m flying crazy this morning I’ll bring you along for the ride.  I got myself worked up over several things early this morning.  One was frustration with people striving and fighting and bringing chaos to their lives.  It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the minutia of everyday life and then strike out at others.  I always feel that this comes from forgetting who we are in the world and forgetting why we came here.  We are here to experience life on this planet in these bodies, and every individual moment is really all we need to concentrate on.  There is a little piece of love in every moment.  It doesn’t matter what happened a moment ago or what we think will happen in the next moment.  This moment now is amazing and full of every possibility we could ever dream of.  And our whole life is really just a moment, and all of history is really just a moment.  I don’t mean that it is short.  I mean that all of time throughout all eternity is really just a moment.  (I just read a science book called “The Order of Time” by Carlo Rovelli, so my mind is wrapped up with understanding time right now, but there’s some good wisdom here.)  At some point when we leave this world we will realize that all of time happens all at once and not as a linear series of moments as we experience now.  Our bodies can really only understand time in a linear way, but this concept helps me rise above the frustration of the day, and I get little glimpses of this understanding of time that fill me with peace.  I know this isn’t making much sense.  Maybe give a read to this book or others about time and space and maybe it will bring you a little peace too.

What have I been up to?

Monday was a really nice day at the Royal Gorge Bridge. I even had friends visit who had been ousted from their house by the Spring Fire but luckily didn’t get burned out.

Tuesday was playing for the rafting Scouts who were very receptive to my music and very excited about getting to hike Colorado in lieu of hiking at Philmont this summer.

What am I up to this week?

Monday and Tuesday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge.  This summer has been very refreshing at the bridge with some very nice folks and some opportunities to play a wide variety of music.  Come on up if you get the chance.

Thursday I won’t be at the Yellow Pine for the barbecue.  We’ll start the barbecue up next week (the 26th), and I’ll be so excited to see my good friends up there and give some hugs and share some stories about the fire.  I miss those folks!

Friday and Saturday I’m spending with family celebrating my nephew Eric’s marriage to his lovely gal Katie and providing sound and playing some my own self as well.  This will be a wonderful weekend!

That’s it for this week.  Life is good.  I’m working on my fall schedule and hoping to book things around the area so I can see more of you.  Of course, we always have my First-Sunday online concerts where I get to see you all over the ether of the internet.  I have a couple benefit concerts coming up for the fires - more next week

Best always,

Tom

Love and Loss

My mind is swirling with all the inputs I’ve had over the last week. I’ve seen good friends and shared smiles and hugs at a reunion. I’ve watched tragedies and shed a tear for those who have loss in the fires. I’ve looked to the future and watched those starting new lives with loving joy with wedding plans for my nephew. I’ve shared time with those setting out on an adventure with young musicians just getting their feet under them. There’s just so much going on all around me at every extreme. And this is what life’s about, but this week was turned up to 11 for me. And it really charges me up when I’m feeling a little run down and am forgetting my joy for the moment. Life is so good. Reminds me of an old Cliff Richard song, “Such Is the Mystery.”

Let the day fall all around you
And let the breath of life surround you
What a day. It should be a holiday

Love your life, my friends.

What have I been up to?

Monday and Tuesday at the Royal Gorge Bridge last week were hot days, but I met some great people and shared some great music. It’s such a neat place to play.

Monday night I got to spread some patriotic cheer playing a few tunes for my friend Mari’s quilting group tribute to women veterans.

Saturday I got to play a concert for a mini-reunion at Philmont Scout Ranch and their dedication of a new staff association office. It was a beautiful night of music under the stars. My friend Ellyn Washburne backed me up on fiddle and vocals on several tunes to round out the evening.

What’s up this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge on the south side stage again. I talk about how much I love doing this gig, and it’s true. Please stop by if you’d like a fun afternoon.

Tuesday I’m playing for the only group of rafting scouts I get to play for this summer. It’s sad that the Ute Park Fire affected so many of folks with the closing of Philmont to hikers this summer. I enjoy the enthusiasm and spirit these young people have.

Thursday we won’t be doing the barbecue at the Yellow Pine this week. Cuchara is still under evacuation, and I’m sure we’ll need a week or more to get back and running once everyone is back.

Sunday I was going to play at the Cuchara chapel a couple times for services and a memorial, but I’m sure those are delayed for now. That’s okay. There’s lots more to do to get ready for my nephew’s wedding in two weeks!

That’s it for this week. There’s never a dull moment in our lives, and living to the fullest should be like this.

Best always,

Tom

Dealing with Angst

Once again we have great angst and worry in our lives.  This time it’s again caused by fires - an all-too-common theme in the summertime West.  There’s just an abundance of dry fuel combined with hot and windy days, and one spark is all it takes.  I’ve seen all kinds of emotions in the mountain towns affected - fear, anger, empathy, love, confusion, peacefulness, vigilance.  I can relate to all of these.  The power of the unknown and the uncertainty of the future is something we live with everyday, but it isn’t quite as present as when a giant monster cloud of smoke and ash is bearing down on us.  I know everything will be okay even if it doesn’t resemble what I know now.  People will rebuild and the mountains will recover in their own beautiful ways.  That is what always drives me.  I believe that there is always more love to be shared and a better future to be found - it’s just how we choose to look at it.  We can be fearful and doubting or we can be loving and supportive of ourselves and each other.  All things will pass.  All of these forces are part of us, and that is again part of the magic and mystery of the universe and our time here.

What have I been up to?

Monday and Tuesday last week at the Royal Gorge Bridge were great!  Monday was one of the most beautiful days I can remember there - perfect weather and beautiful views.  Tuesday I got to interact with so many people on the visitor deck, and that was even cooler!

Thursday was an impromptu fundraiser for the firefighters at the Yellow Pine as the fire was just getting going and no one knew that Cuchara and the Yellow Pine would be evacuated the very next day.  We couldn’t get meat from the barbecue people in Alamosa with La Veta Pass being closed temporarily and then permanently, so Lee and the staff arranged for a free sandwiches and appetizers meal with all moneys contributed going to the La Veta Fire Protection folks.  Unfortunately we didn’t get a lot of folks to come out - once again there was too much angst in the air with the approaching fire.

Saturday was a wonderful party for my niece Laura and her fiancee Josh that was really fun.  Really looking forward to your wedding, you two!

Sunday was a fundraiser for VFW Post 4051 arranged my RV friends Galen and Sue Steele.  I immensely enjoyed talking to these folks and sharing an afternoon with them.  We didn’t raise quite as much money as we had hoped, but it was all good.

Sunday was also my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert.  I definitely was more contemplative with the fire on my mind, and I picked a number of songs that fit the mood.  Many said it was just what they needed.

What am I up to this week?

Monday and Tuesday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge.  I’m on the south side by the bridge both days this week.  If you have family in town or are traveling through please stop by and enjoy some music.

Monday night I’m playing a private tribute to local women veterans and active service members that should be rewarding.  I love doing these kinds of events.

Thursday I won’t be at the Yellow Pine for the barbecue.  Please send good thoughts and energy to all those fighting the fires and displaced and affected by this ongoing situation.  The Yellow Pine is the headquarters for the firefighting operations in Cuchara with their big pastures for structural and firefighting operations and even a helipad and the pond for water supply.

Saturday I also won’t be at Art in the Park in La Veta.  They’ve had to cancel all their Independence Day weekend celebrations this year with the fire.   Again send them good energy.

Saturday I will be doing a special concert at Philmont Scout Ranch for the staff and the folks who are down to dedicate a new building for the staff association.  I love playing for the folks at Philmont, and with no campers there until the middle of July this will be a special chance to do a show with lots of energy and camaraderie amongst the staff.  I’m really looking forward to it!

That’s it for this week.  Remember that angst is just a reminder that we are here a short time and should enjoy it to the fullest.

Best always,

Tom

Beauty of Dance

I played for a dance with my good friend Don Richmond in the afternoon last Saturday in the mountains, and then I sat and watched the dancers continue as Don and the Rifters played into the evening. I was mesmerized, and it made me remember all over again one of the beauties of our experience here on earth. The energy we pass back and forth and the togetherness that syncing in rhythm with another and others is a marvelous part of our physicality. Cultures as far back as history reaches have had dance as a major fixture. It is a joyous expression of movement and breath and grace and gravity. As I played I drove the dance, and as they danced the dancers drove me. It builds a fire of spirit and oneness that is beyond amazing.

What have I been up to?

The Royal Gorge last Monday and Tuesday was a lot fun. I had perfect weather and very sweet folks to play to and interact with. It’s just about perfect up there some days.

The Yellow Pine on Thursday was great too. I got to see so many good friends, and the folks of La Veta and Cuchara are so genuine and friendly. I love it!

The river dance on Saturday topped it off with some real magic. It was great to pick with Don, and I even got to catch up with some Philmont friends there. Wonderful!

What’s up this week?

Monday and Tuesday  12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge again.  Tuesday I’m on the north Visitor Deck which was really fun last time.  If you’re in the area come on in and say “Hi!”

Thursday 6:30-8:30  I’m back at the Yellow Pine for the barbecue.  Is SO enjoy these evenings in the old barn.  As always if you’d like to come please make a reservation by Tuesday so they can plan enough food - 719-742-3528.

Saturday I’m playing a party for my niece Laura and her fiancee Josh.  I’m looking forward to that as well!

Sunday 1:00 and 2:30 I’m playing two 45-minute sets for a fundraiser for VFW Post 4051 in Colorado Springs. It is an honor to help raise money for the veterans in Colorado Springs, and a couple of my RV friends from Good Sam’s are helping to put this on.  Come on out and help support veterans!

Sunday evening 7-8:15ish I’m playing my First-Sunday Online Living Room concert at concertwindow.com/tommunch.  This is my way to connect with all of you over the miles wherever you are in the world.  I love doing these concerts, and I love interacting with you.  If you join in by logging in you make comments on the broadcast.  If you don’t want to login you can still comment by messaging me on FaceBook Messenger or texting or emailing me.  I try to keep up with all the comments.  It’s fun!

That’s it for this week.  You’d think I could cram in a couple more gigs somewhere, huh?  Well I am playing 8 nursing and retirement facilities as well.  Not to brag, but I love to play, and as long as my body holds up I’ll keep on keepin’ on!

Best,

Tom

Traveling and Meeting Folks

I had gigs out of state last weekend, and staying in new places and meeting new folks is always a wonderful experience. For all the uneasiness I often feel about details and interactions, I always end up having a great time and going with the flow. And I guess that’s my lesson for myself once again this morning - when I relax and let things happen naturally it all works out fine. I even see this when I play - especially in the studio. When I tense up and concentrate too hard on a certain passage I freeze up or stumble over words and notes. When I ease up and even stop paying attention for a moment it all flows out in a musical and organic way. It’s so weird how that happens. And this lesson extends into my life in so many ways - from connecting with people to finding my way. There is just an innate flow to life and the universe when I relax and enjoy it. Do you find this too?

What have I been up to?

Monday and Tuesday the Gorge was great fun.  I got to play on the visitor deck on the north side Tuesday and really got to interact more with the folks.

Tuesday night’s party in Navajo Ranch was really special.  Happy Birthday again, Marlene!

Thursday at Yellow Pine was another fun night with old and new friends.  I love these folks so much.

Friday and Saturday night at Red River Brewing Company were crazy fun.  The energy is like a white water ride in there, and it’s so cool to ride it and help it along. I even had folks come all the way from Pueblo to hear me.

Saturday at the ski area in Red River was also a blast.  We had to be indoors with rain, but the atmosphere was fine, and Geneva and her staff made everyone welcome with great food.  Big thanks to my friend Tim Collver for setting up this and the RRBC gigs for me.  He sat in at RRBC, and was doing some cool hands-on ranger talks with Barbara as I played.

What am I up to this week?

Monday and Tuesday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge.  This is such a great place to play with sweeping vistas and nice people all around.  Come on up if you’re in the area!

Thursday I’m back at the Yellow Pine 6:30-8:30  for the barbecue.  This is such a nice environment that I’d love to have you see and be a part of.  They have to order food by Tuesday, so if you want to come you have to make a reservation by noon or so Tuesday.  Call 719-742-3528.

Saturday I’m playing one of the coolest places yet at the Cimarron River Dance.  This is a neat property below the Eagle Nest Dam by Eagle Nest, New Mexico,
near where I spent many of my summers growing up.  It’s close to where the fire occurred on Philmont Scout Ranch just a few weeks ago.  I have wanted to see this area ever since I had some family friends get married there many years ago.  Since it was below the dam, they called it their “dam” wedding in the “dam” meadow.  I don’t know if it’s sold out yet, but I’m playing in the afternoon 3-6 with my good friend Don Richmond sitting in (he set this up for me,) and then his band The Rifters play 7-10.  It’s kind of a partial BYO thing and there are details here - http://thesolitaryangler.com/annual-cimarron-river-dance/.  I can’t wait and would love to have you there!

I guess that’s it for this week.  There’s so much more to tell you, but that’s always how the summer is.  Drink it in and enjoy it my friends, and hey, go with the flow!

Best always,

Tom

Getting to Know New People

As you know I am endlessly fascinated by so many things in life, and this week I want to write about the interaction that happens with new people.  Jen and I got to spend time with our niece and her boyfriend this weekend, and talking with her and her boyfriend, whom we had never met before, was very cool.  There is such a give and take and even a dance that happens as you Q and A with someone you're just meeting.  It's a privilege and even a challenge to find out more about a person and how they think.  I'm reminded of the song from "The King and I,” which I was in a production of in high school, called “Getting to Know You."  What are the words?  "Getting to know you, getting to know all about you.  Getting to like you, getting to hope you like me.  Getting to know you, putting it my way, but nicely.  You are precisely my cup of tea.  Getting to know you, getting to feel free and easy.  When I am with you, getting to know what to say.  Haven't you noticed, suddenly I'm bright and breezy?  Because of all the beautiful and new things I'm learning about you day by day."  I think deep down we understand how we are all related, and getting to know what someone else is experiencing in this life helps us feel not only our kinship but also our rudder's position on our journey.  This life is such an adventure and a playground of emotion and experience, and getting to know people is such a worthwhile part of it.  Don't you think?

What have I been up to?

I have to admit that the first week of my summer season knocked me on my butt.  I hit the ground running and instantly started trying to catch up with myself.  I'm coming alongside myself now, but I'll be taking deep breaths and pacing myself as I go along. I'm going to have to replace my car because it's not keeping up with the schedule, and I'm going to need a little TLC to my feet and hands, but it'll all come toegether.

Monday and Tuesday were a blast at the Royal Gorge Bridge.  I was instantly reminded of why I've always loved playing up there.  It's such a beautiful and inspiring thing to play on the edge of such a splendid canyon for such wonderful folks as those who stop by.

Wednesday I picked up a concert playing with my friend Ken Bausano at the State Fair grounds in Pueblo.  He was there for an RV convention and put together a group of wonderful folks to play for.

Thursday was old home week right off the bat with the regulars at the Yellow Pine.  I love playing for these folks so much, and it was easy to fall right in with them and have a good time.

What's up this week?

Monday and Tuesday 12:30-4:30 I'm back at the Royal Gorge Bridge, and Tuesday I'll be on the north side on the Visitor Deck.  I can't wait!

Tuesday night I have a prvate birthday party at Navajo Ranch near La Veta that should be fun.

Thursday I'm back at the Yellow Pine 6:30-8:30 for the barbecue.  We could have handled more people last week, but not everybody called by Tuesday to make reservations so we could order enough food.  If you want to come please call by Tuesday.  I'd love to have you there at the rustic barn for some great barbecue, music, and camaraderie.

Friday night and Saturday night 7-10 I'm at the Red River Brewing Company in Red River, New Mexico.  My friend Tim Collver set these gigs up for me, and he'll be sitting in both nights with me.  It should be great fun!

Saturday over lunch 11-1 I'll be at the top of the ski resort in Red River for their "Concerts on Top" concert series.  I did one of these a few years back, and I really enjoyed it.  It's a beautiful location with good food and great folks.

Anything new?

I just picked up a gig playing in Cimarron Canyon just below Eagle Nest Lake Dam for the Cimarron River Dance and BBQ.  This is sometimes now as the Dam party in the Dam meadow.  I've wanted to see this place ever since some friends got married many years ago here, and I'm thrilled to have my good freind Don Richmond sitting in for this gig.  (He's the one who got me the gig!)  If you're interested visit thesolitaryangler.com for tickets and information.  It should be a heck of a party.

My Boy Scout gigs may change with the altered schedule at Philmont Scout Ranch with the fire that raged down there.  Stay tuned.

I guess that's all that's new for now.  Check my full schedule at tommunch.com/calendar.

I'll sign off for this week.  Take care of yourself, and enjoy each other - especially new folks and new faces.

Best always,

Tom
