Happy New Year!

This is the time of year when we reminisce about the year gone by and gather our thoughts to plan for the new year. I’m doing just that. I can say that it’s mostly been a good year gone by. I played what I think were some pretty good gigs that meant a lot to me. Bistoro in Pueblo on first Fridays has gone very well and continues to grow.  My First-Sunday Online Living Room Concerts have been a real highlight that I continue to enjoy. I played Walters Brewery a few times in the winter and spring for some fun crowds. I played and wrote songs for Cuchara Chapel each month except during the summer which I thoroughly enjoyed and may use the songs for an upcoming album. I played a bunch of private parties throughout the year which were very enjoyable. I collaborated and recorded a few songs with a friend in Monument. I played a concert at the Bell Tower Cultural Center in Florence in the Spring. In April I got to do another “Crunch and Munch” concert with my friend Ken Saydak in La Veta at the Mercantile. I got to play a children’s dance recital in May. Weekly during the summer I played with bassist and singer Dennis Mills at the Royal Gorge Bridge and also at many private parties. In June I got to open for country star Anita Cochran. In the summer I was also back at the Yellow Pine for the weekly barbecue which was just plain wonderful. Summer also brought concerts at Lucy’s in La Veta, Cuchara Mountain Park, Red River Ski Area, Philmont Scout Ranch, Art in the Park in La Veta, Castle Rock First United Methodist Church, the La Veta Mercantile with singer-songwriter Daniel Market, and a couple house concerts. Fall brought more private appearances for folks like the Good Sam's and the Arts Center in Pueblo. I got to play in October in Denver at Swallow Hill for the final Chuck Pyle Tribute which was a great pleasure, and then I also got to play in Denver at the Littleton Museum in both October and December for different events. October also saw me back in the studio recording songs for an original album and also an old country album. I did a joint concert with the duo Close N Counter at the La Veta Mercantile. I also played in Del Norte at both the Windsor Hotel and Wildwood Sounds concert venue. December brought concerts at the  Bell Tower in Florence, a holiday concert with my friend Don Richmond at Society Hall in Alamosa, and a Christmas concert at the La Veta Mercantile. In addition to all these gigs I did my usual 50 senior facilities every month that I am so devoted to. I love these folks. So what will next year bring? To tell the truth I haven’t made a lot of plans. I like having some flexibility. I do know I’ll be back in the studio to finish up at least one album fairly quickly.  I also am booked again at Bistoro, at Cuchara Chapel, at the Bell Tower, at Francisco Fort in La Veta, at the Yellow Pine, hopefully at the Royal Gorge Bridge, at a few private parties - one that will take me to Nebraska, a few cool house concerts including a house concert tour in Texas in October and one in Colorado Springs in September, and of course I’ll continue my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concerts. I’ll book the La Veta Mercantile at least a couple times including another Christmas concert. It’s weird to look so far into the future when I like to live day by day, and there’s no way to know what each year will really bring. I continue to be positive and loving in everything I do. To me that’s the only way to live. It can be tough when fear is so prevalent in our culture and there are so many threats to happiness and peace. But in the words of the explorers  Lewis and Clark, “We proceeded on.” Life is good!

——

What have I been up to?

I didn’t have any public gigs last week with the Christmas holiday. I got to see family and play a few Christmas shows for my senior facilities. I hope you had a wonderful Christmas if you celebrated it.

——

What am I up to this week?

Friday 6-9 I’m back at Bistoro for our first Friday dinner and music. I always say how much I enjoy these folks at this venue, and it is so true. I’ve met some wonderful new faces there, and I continue to look forward to it every time. Please come out if you can. It’s best to call ahead for a reservation - 719-696-9672.

Sunday 7-8:15 I have my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert, and I’m thinking of doing winter songs and standards this month. We’ve had a bit of cold and snow that is putting me in the mood for this. Of course I may change my mind if we have a warm week. Either way it’ll be fun, and I hope you’ll tune in - facebook.com/tom.munch.

——

That’s it for this week. I hope you start the new year out well and have a safe celebration if you go out on New Year’s Eve.

Best always,

Tom

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I’m just reaching out briefly to wish you a wonderful holiday. I have had one of the best holidays ever with wonderful family and friends and gatherings with so much cheer. We do have a sick kitty at the house who needs some care, but I’m hopeful we can nurse her back to health quickly. Happy Holidays to you wherever and however you celebrate!

——

What have I been up to?

Saturday my show at the La Veta Mercantile was out of this world! It was just very special in every way. The whole evening came together to create one of the best concerts I’ve ever had. There was lots of singing along and so many smiles and warm hearts. Magical!

——

What am I up to this week?

I don’t have any public gigs this week. I’m only taking Christmas Day off from my regular senior facilities, so Jen and I aren’t taking any extended time off this holiday. Next week I’ll have more to share, but for now I’ll be enjoying the holiday with family and my seniors.

——

That’s it for this week. I hope you have the most wonderful holiday.

Best always,

Tom

Moments

I just finished up my show with Don Richmond doing Christmas songs at Society Hall in Alamosa, and I’m struck by how many moments are shining in my head from tonight. I have so many snapshots of certain beautiful spots in songs or spoken memories that light the evening. It represents to me how the moments in our lives are like little gems we keep in a special place in our minds to take out and look at as cherished memories. It’s a wonderful thing to have these, and I’m convinced that these are the reasons we live this life. Moments of joy and even pain are the stuff of our lives. Cherish them and live life to the fullest, my friends.

——

What have I been up to?

Last Monday in the studio was very fruitful, and we’re having such a good time recording and arranging the songs. I’m anxious for folks to hear our efforts.

Wednesday our caroling got cancelled, but hopefully we can arrange something again.

Thursday my event for all the state representatives went really well. Actually my guitar pickup stopped working, and I had to use the extra mic I had brought. Life always keeps us on our toes. It all turned out okay though. These are wonderful folks.

Sunday my concert with Don Richmond in Alamosa was such a joy. As I wrote above, there are so many special moments with new faces and old friends that represent a wonderful night!

——

What am I up to this week?

Saturday at 7:00 I’m playing a Christmas concert at La Veta Mercantile. The good folks of La Veta and Cuchara are very dear to me, and this evening promises to be a very special one with Christmas cheer and warm memories. Please come out if you can.

——

That’s it for this week. If I don’t see you before Christmas, have a wonderful one and a happy new year! Find those special moments that will be the gems in your heart.

Make Room for the Magic

Loving this Christmas season and all the opportunities to play for so many folks, but I must admit that some years it’s tougher to bring on the magic feelings that the music and the season engenders. This year has brought more and less. I’ve found new songs and details of those songs for me that have made the spirit much more deep and rich. But I’ve also found it difficult to connect to some of the joy that old favorites used to bring to me. The new songs have been “The Wexford Carol” and “I Wonder as I Wander,” They both are haunting and ancient in their beautiful and wistful melodies. Check out Moira Smiley’s or Alison Krause’s version of the former, and check out Linda Ronstadt or John Jacob Niles’ version of the latter.  “The Wexford Carol” has a melody that goes back to the 12th century or before. John Jacob Niles discovered “I Wonder as I Wander” as a folklorist in the Appalachian mountains in the 1930s and wrote new verses to it. But as I said, I have lost some of the verve for the older favorites. I think it is just a lack of paying attention on my part to the words and melodies as I perform the old favorites. Yes, it’s possible to go through the motions sometimes on songs you know so well. I’ll slow down and give these songs their due in these next couple weeks. And this all relates to my concert this Sunday with my good friend Don Richmond because we’ll be performing his song ”Make Room for the Magic.” It talks about feeling humbug about the music and the season and opening ourselves up to the joy and meaning we all share at Christmas. I hope we all make room for the Magic this season. It is here and gone before we know it, and we can all use a little wonder and joy.

What have I been up to?

Monday in the studio was very fruitful. I’m fleshing out the songs for the old country album with bass and some other lead instruments. It’s sounding good and I’m anxious for you to hear it.

Friday at Bistoro was a packed house with loads of Christmas cheer. Love those folks!

Saturday was the Christmas concert at the Bell Tower Cultural Center, and it was a really fun show. So many nice folks came out on a wonderful evening.

Sunday morning was a very nice chapel service where I got to sing a bunch of Christmas songs in Cuchara and see all the fine folks I’ve come to love up there.

Sunday evening was playing at the Littleton Museum for their Christmas evening on their beautiful and historic museum grounds. This is always a treat. There were some lovely folks out to help celebrate what turned into a beautiful evening.

——

What am I up to this week?

Monday I’m back in the studio continuing to add tracks to my old country album. It’s really shaping up.

Wednesday I’m going caroling with a bunch of friends in downtown Pueblo. It’s nothing official, but it should be fun.

Thursday I’m playing for a group of state legislators that I play for annually. It’s always fun and very heartening to see the drive and sincerity these folks have for what they do.

Saturday I had a cancellation, so if anyway wants to throw a party I’m open.

Sunday night at 7:00 I’m in Alamosa at Society Hall to play a Christmas concert with my good friend Don Richmond. I’ve played Christmas music with Don several times, but this will be the first concert we’ve played of Christmas music in many years. And Society Hall is not just any venue. It’s a lovingly-restored concert hall that is perfect for acoustic music. I’m so looking forward to it. Don and I have some very special music planned, so I’ll hope you’ll come see us if you’re in the Alamosa area.

——

That’s it for this week. I hope you are enjoying the season and feeling the magic wherever you are.

Best always,

Tom

Energy and Gumption

I’m beginning a crazy-busy month with lower than my normal energy, and I wanted to write about where energy comes from for me.  I’ve written before about the ways I try to maintain a positive outlook on life.  I try to look at simple things with wonder and gratitude.  I stop to look at the bigger picture instead of the little problems that pop up in my path.  I try to exercise regularly and eat things that don’t make me feel logy.  I fill my day with things that delight and inspire, and I try to avoid things that depress and dispirit me.  I try to give in every way I can - knowing that giving fills me in a way that is hard to explain.  I guess giving is like priming the pump of life - once it is flowing from me it opens me up to even more energy coming from the spirit of life all around me (kind of woo-woo, but it works.)  I am prone to feeling a little hopeless sometimes.  Aren’t we all?  When I was in college I would drive around town in the middle of the night.  In my later years I would get up and do a project.  Nowadays I have the whole arsenal above I mentioned to get me going in the right direction.  Ultimately I know everything will work out, and that is the final place I get energy.  How about you?  Do you have ways you give yourself some gumption and direction?

——

What have I been up to?

Wednesday was the tree lighting and opening of ElectriCritters at the Pueblo Zoo, and it was cold but fun.  The highlight was singing all the Christmas songs for the first time this year. And I invited the zoo director Abbie Krause to sit in, which was a blast!  The display is gorgeous this year, and I really encourage you to go see all the beautiful sculptures and lights if you’re in the area.

Sunday night was my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert, and we did it from my brother and sister-in-law’s house in Pueblo.  Their house was decorated beautifully for the holiday, and they had lots of friends over to share the evening which made it extra special!

——

What am I up to this week?

Monday I’m in the studio working on my “Back to the Old Country” album I wrote about last week.  It’s such a thrill working and creating in the studio, and I can’t wait to have you hear what I’m working on.

Friday 6-9 is First-Friday at Bistoro, and I’m looking forward to seeing my favorite Pueblo folks out for an evening of good food, drinks, and music.  Come on out if you’re in Pueblo.

Saturday 7-9 I’m doing a Christmas concert at the Bell Tower Cultural Center in Florence.  I really enjoy getting to play in this grand old church converted into an arts center.  The folks are wonderful, and the room is magic.

Sunday 10:30-11:30 I’m playing music for the Cuchara Chapel.  I so enjoy playing monthly for the folks of Cuchara all winter, and it being Christmastime I know that the service will be wonderful.  I just learned an old Christmas carol from Ireland called “The Wexford Carol” that I plan to sing for special music.  It’s a melody I’ve known for years and was delighted to find had words too. There’s a dandy version of it by Alison Krause and Yo-Yo Ma.

Sunday 5:30-8 I’m in Littleton to play for A Holiday’s Evening at the Littleton Museum.  This is always a fun event in Littleton with lots fo families and holiday cheer.  If you’re in the Denver area please consider coming out for some music, hot cider, and Christmas cheer outdoors by the old barn.  Bundle up. Even though there’s always a warm fire nearby, it still gets pretty chilly in the evening in Littleton.

——

That’s it for this week.  I hope your Christmas season is starting out well, and I’d love to hear how you pump yourself up on a regular basis.  This life is an adventure and a journey, and sharing our thoughts and ideas is a big part of what makes it worthwhile.

Best always,

Tom

Life and Purposes

I’m contemplating life and purposes today - a common thing for me. If you’ve been following my blog you’ll know I’m working on another album of original songs. I’ve been writing this album for the better party of this year although I honestly haven’t had enough long stretches of writing time to get as far as I had hoped. And the purpose of the album has been convoluted. I want to create something that is a comfort to our cultural angst in this moment. I’ve been tentatively calling it my “hippy-love” album because I wanted to put some of the love from the 60’s out into the world in my own way. This is partially prodded by my own awakening in the past few years. I dare to think I have something to share that’s worthwhile - imagine that. But you already knew that. I’ve been sharing that in my blog for several years. So I did hit the studio a few times this last month with the hope that I would be able to finish the partial songs I had started and record the songs that were complete. Well, I got three songs recorded before I had to rethink. The other new songs weren’t so easy to finish, and the feedback I was getting was that the songs I was hoping to include weren’t real enough and were too preachy. So I spent a few angst-filled days trying to decide whether I should push through and release something possibly half-baked or let the project have the time it needs to make something truly good. I won’t lie to you. It’s tough to go through this mental wrangling. I don’t know how many more years I can do music at the level I want to do. Father Time is not always kind to fingers, vocal chords, and musical brains. So with the studio time I had booked I decided to pursue something else that I’ve been interested in - an old country album and a live album. I was able to record a dozen old country songs in one session that we are now fleshing out, and I’ve been recording my shows for almost three years so that there’s plenty of material there - I just have to listen through it and pick out good recordings of good songs. So that’s where I am in my life right now. I don’t really ever plan to retire, but there will come a day when it doesn’t all come together for me when I take my guitar out of its case. And it’s hard to maintain a good mental outlook when there is so much angst in our culture. But we press on - trying to love others and spread good in the world. Don’t we?

What have I been up to?

Sunday a couple weeks back was playing for Cuchara Chapel, and it was wonderful getting to play for the folks and spend some time with good friends.

——

What am I up to this week?

Wednesday at 5:30 I’m playing for the Pueblo Zoo for the Tree Lighting and ElectriCritters opening which runs from 5-8. This is always a wonderful display full of holiday cheer and fun. They always have new sculptures to see that are whimsical and festive, and I look forward to it! Please come out if you can. You can find more on their website pueblozoo.org or on Facebook.

Sunday 7-8:30 is my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert, and this will be a holiday show from my brother and sister-in-law's house with all of their wonderful decorations and cheer. We’ve done the past two live Christmas shows from their house either here in Pueblo or near Taos, and they’ve been a blast with folks in the house and online. I do these shows on Facebook Live now, and you can access them on my Facebook page - facebook.com/tom.munch. Please tune in if you can.

——

What’s coming up?

I have a bunch of places to play in December with the holidays. In addition to all of the private parties and nursing and retirement facilities I’m playing I have the following:

6th, 6-9, Bistoro, Pueblo, CO
7th 7-9, Bell Tower Cultural Center Christmas Concert, Florence, CO
8th 10:30-11:30, Cuchara Chapel, Cuchara, CO

15th 7-9, Society Hall Christmas Concert with Don Richmond, Alamosa, CO
21st 7-9, La Veta Mercantile Christmas Concert, La Veta, CO

I’d love to see you and give you a big holiday hug if you’re in the area for any of these shows.

Writing About Music

I’m working on music for the album I’m recording in the studio, and I’m in a bit of a quandary. I’m tentatively planning on calling the album “Love”, and my idea is to harken back to the 60's with an emphasis on helping each other and bringing a little love into our current culture. But my quandary is exactly how to do that. I’ve written several songs already, but they come across as kind of preachy or weird at times. If you know me you know that I’m pretty mellow and accepting of everyone, and I definitely don’t try to offend. But as I’m aging I’m wanting more and more to spread what little wisdom and insight I’ve gained in my short 58 years on this planet. It’s a tall order, and not one I take lightly. My blog over these past several years has been leaning toward this same goal. I’m just convinced that we all do better when we accept and help each other instead of tearing each other down and spreading fear. Yes, we all have our differences and unique ways of looking at the world, but many of our ills could be helped by just small gestures of care and love. There is plenty of everything to go around if we stop fighting and start caring. Of course, my own spiritual beliefs go very deep into directions that I don’t expect others to adopt or understand, but I think we can all prosper and live joyful and full lives no matter what our beliefs are if we just try.

What have I up been up to?

Friday night at Bistoro was full of wonderful friends and new faces. I can’t wait ’til the next time!

Sunday night my online concert on Facebook was a blast. I did Beatles tunes with a few other writers thrown in from requests. It was an unplanned party!

——

What am I up to this week?

Monday I’m in the studio working on the album I mentioned above. I really enjoy the creative process, and it’s so good to be back into it.

Sunday at 10:30 I’m playing for the chapel service at Cuchara Chapel in Cuchara, Colorado. I’m working up a new tune that I’m really looking forward to sharing. If you’re up for a beautiful drive in the mountains and seeing fresh snow on the Sangre de Cristo mountains then come on down.

——

That’s it for this week. I appreciate you and your friendship. If you have any comments on my ideas above please reply.

Friends

I’m thinking today about friends and their influence on our lives through the years.  I’m anticipating talking to an old friend this afternoon whom I haven’t talked to in 40 years.  I was corresponding with his wife, and I told her that there are things I still do every day that reflect a conversation or an experience I had with this friend, and that amazed me.  Part of this is because we are so affected in our formative years by all the things we see and take in, and part of this is that wise habits and lessons we learn from our friends become lasting as we see their value in everyday living.  Of course, it’s hard to see in the moment that these things are what will stick with us for all time, but when we reflect on them we can trace them back to a moment when they struck us in what might have been an ordinary situation.  I’m in the midst of writing a song that will include this old friend’s name with a lesson of helping others instead of playing a trick on them.  At the time I thought that he was missing a chance to have some fun, but he saw through to the core of the matter.  Fun at someone else’s expense doesn’t really build and encourage the other person or the friendship.  Even when it’s playful it still runs the risk of alienating the other person and is really unnecessary.  That’s a valuable lesson to learn at any point in our lives, and is one that I am reminded of every time I try to be “clever” instead of just doing something helpful in the first place.  Thank you to my friend “Grinner” for teaching me this lesson, and I’m looking forward to catching up with him.

Driving Dynamics

I wanted to write about driving dynamics today. What do I mean by that? Well, maybe driving politics and psychology would be a better title. I, like everyone else, pride myself on being a good driver, but I fight it, and it speaks to something bigger in my psyche. For instance, in my experience most people drive a little above the speed limit as a habit. I tend to do this too, but I don’t like to bunch up with everyone else, so I drive a little faster until I find a bigger break in the traffic or else I go a little slower to find that break. When I’m going faster I feel more in control, but that can be a losing proposition when everyone starts to go faster. It almost escalates into a dangerous competition. Alternatively, I find that if I go slower I feel unsafe when I’m being overtaken by faster traffic that is often not careful or considerate. As far as something bigger in my psyche, I want to be as peaceful and as loving as I can be in my dealings with others. Being more in control is sometimes a boost to my ego that is not as peaceful and loving. But being slower does not lend itself to peace either when I’m concerned about my safety along with the others riding with me. I can’t control the thoughts or actions of others. We’re each making our individual journeys through this life, and it’s not my place to tell others to be more peaceful and loving, but what a wonderful place it would be if we all were. I’ll go on trying - hoping that an act of fairness or kindness can encourage someone else to do the same.

What have I been up to?

Saturday I played at the Windsor Hotel in Del Norte for diners and dancers. It was fun, and I had some wonderful folks come out. I don’t travel that much for these kind of gigs, but it was a good time. I got some pretty sunrise pictures on Lookout
Mountain with the “D” on it for Del Norte the morning after as well.

——

What am I up to this week?

Saturday 7-9ish I’m back in Del Norte for a concert at Wildwood Sounds. This is kind of a house concert setting in an old American-Legion-type hall. I’ve been wanting to play here for several years, and I thank my friend Daniel Market for setting up this gig. Come on out if you’re in the area.

——

That’s it for this week. I’ve been having fun doing a lot of spooky Halloween songs. This is a fun season. Take care, and I hope to see you soon.

Best,

Tom

Joy

I wanted to write about something today that I often deny myself - joy. I know that sounds odd for me to say that I deny myself this, but it’s true. I find myself purposely going out of my way to not let myself be joyful. I’ll make myself miserable instead of filling my world with happiness sometimes. So why do I find myself not being joyful? I’m not really sure. Sometimes being cross or ornery or a downer is some sort of self-punishment, I guess. We get this idea that we’re not worthy from example or from teachings we were exposed to as children. I tell myself that I’ve let go of this over the years, but it still creeps in. When this happens I try not to dwell on it. I know it’s not really me. I remind myself that I am part of a magnificent world in a magnificent universe, and that all creatures are worthy of love and deserving of joy. It’s so easy to smile. It lifts our spirits, and it brings joy to others around. Sometimes just putting on a smile can lift my whole persona. And then I put joy and love into the world, and I am rewarded tenfold or more. It’s pretty simple, I’ve found. How about you? Do you find yourself denying yourself joy?

——

What have I been up to?

Monday was my first day in the studio on my next album. Don and I had to catch up and get in the zone before we could record anything, and then we spent the afternoon capturing the first song. I think you’ll like it. It’s what I’ve been calling my Neill Diamond Buddhist song. I have several more songs ready to record, and I’m writing a bunch before my next session in November.

Saturday I played the Littleton Museum Harvest Festival and had a blast. I played a variety of fall and Halloween songs for the families and friends who came.

Saturday afternoon I also recorded a song  in Denver that a friend wrote and that I contributed the music, guitar and voice to. It’s based on a Chuck Pyle idea that I think you’ll like. More about it later.

Sunday was playing for Cuchara Chapel, which was also very nice. I love the folks up there!

Sunday evening I played my first online concert on Facebook, and it turned out pretty well (after a restart because I couldn’t see comments on the screen.) Many kind friends tuned in, and it was great to welcome many Facebook friends I’d never played for before. I’m really looking forward to the next one the first Sunday of November. I’ll figure out how to work the comments better there too by then.

What am I up to this week?

Saturday night 6-9 I’m at the beautiful Windsor Hotel in Del Norte, Colorado. I’ve never played this venue before, and every indication is that this will be a most enjoyable evening with some great folks. Check out their website - windsorhoteldelnorte.com. If you’re in the area or would fancy a night at a classic historic hotel with great food near the Fall colors, then come on out!

——

That’s it for this week. I’m loving the Fall now that the temperature has cooled down a bit. Take care of yourself, and spread joy wherever you can.

Best always,

Tom

Creating

I’ve been in the studio all day with my good friend Don Richmond, and it feels so good to be recording what I’ve been writing over this past year. I wrote several years ago about what it’s like to be creative. It’s like opening the floodgates on the energy of the universe. I instantly feel purpose and flow. Sometimes in this life it’s easy to feel stagnant, and it’s important to feel engaged and vibrant. Of course, there are always doubts about the music and lyrics, but the energy of the creative process usually takes those away. I hope you are creating somehow in your niche of the world. It’s good medicine.

What have I been up to?

Last week was a whirlwind.

Friday I played at Bistoro to an appreciative group of friends for our first-Friday monthly outing. That place feels so right.

Saturday was the Chuck Pyle tribute at Swallow Hill in Denver, and it was a packed house. It’s such a gratifying thing to share a space with other accomplished musicians to honor someone we loved so much.

Sunday was my show at the La Veta Mercantile with Gordon and Richard of the duo Close N Counter, and it was a joy. I got to play a bunch of Jazz standards on my own as well as a few guitar songs with Gordon and Richard that were a delight.

——

What am I up to this week?

Monday was the studio I’m writing from now. I’m working on my next album, and it feels good to say that.

Saturday 11:30-1:30 I’m at Littleton Museum for their Harvest Festival. If you’re in the Denver area please come check it out. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Sunday 7-8:15 MDT is my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert on the second Sunday this month.  I’ll be doing this on Facebook Live this month for the first time.  Hopefully it will work well.  Here’s the link - facebook.com/tom.munch

That’s it for this week.  I hope you feel joy in your day and get to experience a little creativity this week.

Love

I’ve been wanting to write about love for years, and I think I’m in the right frame of mind tonight to do it. What really is love? Is it just a feeling between two people? I believe it’s much more. It is a feeling, but it’s also a force that permeates everything from religion to music to all the world. We often hear that God is  love. Does it go around the other way as well? Maybe love is God. Maybe the drive for good and peaceful existence and respect is love and God at the same time. What if the force that keeps the stars in place and our hearts beating that science and religion explains is love? Somewhere down deep I feel that everything is really quite simple, and when we truly understand it will all become clear. In my quietest moments enjoying a sunrise or caressing our cat Tuzi I feel this simple truth that is all encompassing. Love is all there is - just love.

——

What have I been up to?

Last Thursday I played a reception at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center that was a lot of fun. It was the closing of their exhibit of hyper-realistic paintings of cars and motorcycles, so I did a bunch of car and motorcycle songs. Very cool.

The weekend I took off to close mountain cabins for the winter. It was great to get a couple more days in the mountains with family before the snow flies.

——

What am I up to this week?

Friday 6-9 I’m back at Bistoro for our first-Friday monthly outing of good food, good friends, and good music. I always look forward to this! Make reservations now if you’d like to be a part of it - 719-696-9672.

Saturday 7-9 I’m playing the last tribute concert to the late, great Chuck Pyle at Swallow Hill in Denver.  It has been a thrill and an honor to celebrate my old friend for these last three annual tributes, and I’m sure this show will be especially wonderful. Chuck’s music had a rare touch that I’d love for you to hear. Tickets are still available. https://www.eventbrite.com/e/an-evening-of-the-music-of-chuck-pyle-tickets-61534561530

Sunday 7-9 after La Veta Oktoberfest I’m playing a really cool concert at the La Veta Mercantile with Gordon Close and Richard Blanchard and their duo “Close N Counter” which promises to be really special. Gordon and Richard play very cool instrumental guitar arrangements of songs in the tradition of Chet Atkins and other great fingerstyle guitarists. I’ll be doing some of my standards and folk songs for my part of the concert, they’ll do their thing, and then we’ll come together for several compelling collaborations to wrap up the show. I’d love to have you there if you’re up for a beautiful night of music. 719-742-3387

Sunday I won’t be doing my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert since I’m doing the concert in La Veta. I’ll be doing that on the second Sunday of October on the 13th from 7-8ish MDT, and it’ll be on Facebook at http://facebook.com/tom.munch.

——

That’s it for this week. I’m still mulling over what love really is. I know it sounds a little wacky, but I do believe it’s the force that permeates our lives and moves the universe.

Best always,

Tom

Self-Destruction

I’m still watching and reflecting on the PBS documentary about country music, and a recurring theme among stars is their self-destructive habits. So many of them have trouble handling the stress of the road or the complications of stardom, and for some it leads to alcohol or drugs or bad behavior. It’s a problem that plagues most societies. I sometimes feel a little self-destructive myself. Exhaustion or self pity or conflict can turn into a desire to throw it all away with bad behavior or indulgence. This seems to come from forgetting why I’m here or allowing myself to be separated from my spiritual senses. It’s part of the reason I try to build in wonder in my life - in beauty, in nature, in music, in friendships. All these things help me to keep self-destruction in check. It’s another facet of the love versus fear conundrum I often mention. Fear drives destruction, and loves drive peace and purpose. This life sure gets complicated when, in truth, it is so simple. What do you think?

——

What have I been up to?

Wednesday was great fun at the Pueblo Zoo playing for Senior Discovery Days. It wasn’t the big blowout that the previous Senior Safari had become, but it was a great group of folks.

Friday was the concert for the Good Sam’s folks, and the theme was “Pioneer Spirit,” so I did a bunch of old pioneer songs which was so much fun.

Saturday was a Philmont reunion where I had such a good time seeing old friends, sharing Oktoberfest food and beer, and singing a few songs.

——

What am I up to this week?

I just have one public gig on Thursday when I play for the Sangre De Cristo Arts Center from 5:30 to 7:30 for the final celebration of their Luster Exhibition. This exhibition features spectacular artwork on cars and motorcycles. It’s pretty cool. Come on out.

The weekend I’ll be back to the mountains to close up our family cabins for the year.

——

That’s it for this week. I hope you enjoy the beautiful Fall season.

Best,

Tom

Country Music

I watched Part 1 of the Ken Burns documentary on country music Sunday night, and I was surprised at my reaction. The premise of the first episode was this - that country music came out of the confluence of black and white music and culture as well as the mixing of three instruments from Europe and Africa: violin (fiddle), banjo, and guitar. It was very interesting and well done. There was a lot of fine detail, and there were stories about many musicians that were fascinating. But many of the early country musicians defied classification, and that’s what I really took from the show. They may have been the musicians that modern country musicians deem as the founders of the genre, but they were playing what I would call folk, cowboy, blues, and jazz music. That made me think of the music I play. I have always called my music “southwest folk jazz,” but it’s really a combination of all of the music that has influenced me. I play all of those styles and more. It’s what speaks to me and lets me express what I hold inside. Of course, my music is heavily influenced by the capabilities and voice of the guitar, but the guitar is so full-voiced and versatile that the sky really is the limit. I’m a product of this rich heritage just like country music. I highly recommend the documentary so far. It’s airing on PBS for the next two weeks.

——

What have I been up to?

Last Thursday was a fun party for a chili cook-off with old friends that was great fun.

Friday was a private party for friends in La Veta that went by way too fast. Part of the audience was even a couple does and their fawns!

The weekend was a couple beautiful days in the mountains where I got some unbelievable sunrise pictures that I posted on Facebook.

——

What’s up this week!

This week I have more private events.

Friday is a concert for the Good Sams group. I’ve played for these folks all over Colorado, and I always love their warmth and enthusiasm.

Saturday is a Philmont reunion in Colorado Springs that is always a good time.

——

That’s it for this week. Again I have a lot of public gigs coming up if you’re out and about. October 4th is Bistoro in Pueblo. October 5th is the Chuck Pyle tribute concert in Denver. October 6th is the concert at the Merc with Close N Counter in La Veta. October 12th is the Harvest Festival at Littleton Museum in Denver. October 13th is Cuchara Chapel and my online concert on Facebook. October 19th is the Windsor Hotel in Del Norte. October 26th is the concert at Wildwood Sounds in Del Norte. Whew! Very full schedule coming up, but I’m sure there’s always room for more.

Best,

Tom

Knowing When

I’m switching gears as I transition from one season to the next, and this always put me a little at sea. I’m not the kind of guy who ever plans too far in the future. I have always thought that people and situations come into your life for a reason, and so I have figured it was good to have some flexibility. But knowing when to wrap something up and when to seek change needs to be part of that flexibility as well. Sometimes I can visualize what I want next, but this time I think I just need to meditate and let things simmer. I’ve been reading a lot about following our inner-guidance system. I haven’t quite learned how to do that well, but I’ll let you know what I figure out. Life is certainly interesting and engaging, and I cherish every moment. Thank you for coming along for the ride!

——

What have I been up to?

Monday was the last day of the season at the Royal Gorge Bridge, and it was a doozy. I shared the stage and swapped songs with Daniel Market, doing mostly folk tunes and originals. It was a blast!

Thursday was the season-closing party at the Yellow Pine, and it was wonderful. There were lots of good folks dancing, eating, drinking, and sharing friendship. It was a night to remember.

Friday was a busy night at Bistoro with new and old friends enjoying the vibe. It was a very nice night.

Sunday was the first service of the winter season at Cuchara Chapel, and we talked about change and did a little tribute to my friend Oleta who passed 3 weeks go. I love these Cuchara folks, and they love me right back.

——

What am I up to this week?

Thursday is a fall chili cook-off at one of my nursing facilities, and it will be great fun because I get to play with my old friends Dennis Heid and Rich Clark.

Friday is a family party for good friends in La Veta that will most likely turn into an old-fashioned sing-along or maybe even a hootenanny. I can’t wait!

On the weekend I hope to get to the mountains for a little R&R.

——

Down the Road

I have several things coming up I want to mention. I’m going to have to move my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert next month because I’m playing a special concert at the La Veta Mercantile from 7-9 on Sunday, October 6th. I’m uniting with the duo Close N Counter for an evening of instrumental and vocal music that should be really interesting and fun. Gordon Close and Richard Blanchard of Close N Counter play instrumental guitar versions of a lot of classic guitar tunes and old favorites. They played a concert at the Merc in the summer of 2018 that folks really enjoyed, and when they asked me if I’d like to do a show with them I said “Yes!” We plan to split the first set with me doing more of jazz and folk songs I do, and then we’ll get together after intermission to share some cool arrangements of both of our songs. You can get tickets from the La Veta Mercantile or on their Facebook page shortly.

As a result of having the Close N Counter show on the first Sunday of October I’m going to move my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert to the second Sunday of October. We’ll be doing this as a Facebook Live event also since Concert Window has closed down. I’ll probably do a test this month to make sure Facebook will work well for these shows.

That first weekend of October on Saturday the 5th I’ll also be playing at Swallow Hill Daniels Hall in Denver for the Chuck Pyle Tribute Concert once again. I have really enjoyed being a part of these shows the past three years since Chuck's passing in 2015, and I highly recommend them if you’re in the Denver area. Chuck’s music is really special, and the performers come together at this show to really put on a whiz-bang concert in his honor.

Then I’m back in Littleton that next Saturday the 12th to play the Littleton Museum Harvest Festival from 11:30-1:30. I have loved playing at the museum the past couple Christmas seasons, and this should be great fun as well. Come on out if you’re in the area.

On the 19th of October I’m trekking over to Del Norte to play at the Windsor Hotel from 6-9 on their beautiful patio. The Windsor is a classic hotel with beautiful amenities, and it would make a wonderful weekend getaway for anyone.

Lastly the 26th of October 7-9 I’m playing a concert with my friend Daniel Market in Del Norte at Wildwood Sounds. This is a top-notch concert venue where I’ve wanted to play for many years.

——

I’d better close. This is one of the longest updates I’ve put out in years. If you made it all the way to the end I thank you. Be good to each other, and let me know your thoughts on how you know when to make changes.

Best always,

Tom

Dullness

I’m checking in with myself this morning, and normally I feel a burning ball of light and enthusiasm at my core, but this morning this is an overwhelming dullness and heaviness. I’m not sure what I can attribute this to. Yes, I’m still a little tired from probably not getting great sleep, and yes, I am facing a very hot day of work outside which is always draining. But there’s something more. Maybe I’m psychically picking up on the combined worries about the hurricane bearing down on friends in Florida. Maybe I’m feeling the end of the summer season. As I write I can feel it beginning to change as I try to figure it out, and it seems to be waning. Yes, now it’s mostly gone. I think we all feel these things sometimes. My ever-present peace of knowing that everything will be okay buoys me up, but letting myself feel the waves of life passing under and over me is okay too. This life is always changing, and although I am an old soul at my essence, I love to feel the swirl of life around me that I can interact with. I am here to feel these things and write about them and express them in ways that others can also feel. It’s a privilege and a joy! Pretty heavy introspection, but what else would you expect from me. 😃 Have a great Labor Day!

——

What have I been up to?

Last Monday and Friday were beautiful days playing at the Royal Gorge Bridge. Monday Dennis Mills and I played, and Friday we were joined by Daniel Market. We were also joined by the bighorn sheep herd that grazed by us most of the day. We were swapping tunes and having a generally great time.

Sunday was my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert, and I played a mixture of originals, tribute songs to my friend Oleta, and some hippy love songs that feel right more and more each day.

Fun week!

——

What am I up to this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 is the last music day of the season at the Royal Gorge Bridge. Daniel Market is joining me again to swap some tunes, and I think Dennis Mills will back us up on bass again. It should be a fun Labor Day although it’s supposed to be pretty hot. Come on out if you’re up for an afternoon of music and beautiful sights.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 I’m playing the last hurrah of the season at the Yellow Pine as we do our A&W (Appetizers and Wine) Party. It’s a free event where you bring-your-own beverage with an appetizer to share in the historic barn. I’m really looking forward to it! Come on up to the mountains if you’re looking for a relaxing evening of friends and music.

Friday 6-9 I’m back at Bistoro for our First-Friday dinner and music evening in Pueblo. This is always a special night of good food and drink, good friends, and my music in the sweet atmosphere that Bistoro puts down. Call 719-696-9672 for reservations. It fills up fast.

Sunday 10:30-11:30 I’m starting the non-summer season at the Cuchara Chapel. I lead the music and do special songs once a month for the chapel services with my good friend Eileen Ramsey speaking at this cute little mountain chapel. It’s an opportunity to express my spirituality, and I’ve been writing songs for these services that will be included on my upcoming Love album. I’d love to have you there if you’re looking for a beautiful spot to have a little inspiration. I’ll be doing another song in tribute to my friend Oleta who lived nearby in La Veta.

——

That’s it for this week. I’m still feeling a little groggy and apprehensive about the hurricane and the hot day ahead, but I know it will all work out. Be good to each other, and I hope to see you down the road - maybe this week!

Best always,

Tom

Friendship

I’m thinking about friendship and the interactions that happen over time in our relationships. I lost a good friend this last week who has been ill for several years. I’m saddened, but I’m also peaceful knowing that she’s still here in spirit although I can’t give her a big hug anymore. I’ve been going over our correspondence for the past 5+ years, and I’m taken with the kindnesses and humor that pass between people in a friendship. Little bits of wisdom and respect are offered and exchanged. There is a real comfort to having an ease of acceptance and a knowing between friends. It’s one of the wonderful things we have in this life and beyond. Just a look says it all.

——

What have I been up to?

Last Monday at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills on bass was great fun. Some great folks stopped by the stage for some music.

My parties on Tuesday and Sunday were a blast as well - one in Cuchara and one in Pueblo. Playing for friends in intimate settings is very rewarding.

——

What am I up to this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills one more time. The weather is supposed to be cooler, and I think it’ll be a great time.

Friday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Daniel Market which should be fun. We did a concert at the Merc in La Veta a few weeks ago that was wonderful, and I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with him. Come out to the Gorge if you’d like a fun day in the great outdoors. We’ll be there on Labor Day too.

Sunday 7:00-8:15 is my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert. This is my last one on Concert Window as they are shutting down on the 15th of September. I enjoy these so much, and I’m still deciding whether to do the next concerts on StageIt.com or Facebook Live. What’s your preference?

That’s it for this week. I appreciate you and your friendship.

Woodstock

I’ve been thinking a lot about Woodstock. I’ve done several songs from the festival over the past couple weeks, and because this last weekend marked 50 years since that event I figured I should reflect on it. I grew up knowing it was a magical weekend - hearing snippets of the music and the vibe over the years. I’ve watched several shows and documentaries this past month that tried to capture the feeling of the event and the mood of the country during that time. We used to run into hippies all the time in Taos back in the late 60’s and early 70’s. My parents told us to steer clear of them, but I knew they were in touch with something worthwhile. Over the years I’ve grown to appreciate their message of peace and love. It seems we need that even more today than ever. My study of religion, philosophy, science, and spirituality has brought me full circle right back to where the hippies were on that magic weekend. Their awareness of purpose and intent for humanity cuts me to the core. Unity and caring are still the key to a happy and healthy world. Why live in a world of fear when you could live in a world of love? Woodstock was a successful experiment in that.

——

What have I been up to?

Monday, Tuesday, and Friday I played at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills on bass. We had several friends come out, and the weather was mostly perfect.

Thursday was the last Yellow Pine Barbecue of the season, and it was a good one. The evening was very special with some fine requests for some great songs, and there were friends and hugs all around.

——

What’s up this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills as the summer draws to a close. We’ve had fun learning new songs and meeting folks from all over the world.

Tuesday and Sunday I have private parties for some wonderful folks in Cuchara and Pueblo. I really enjoy doing these. If you ever have a special event or other excuse for some live music then give me a yell. There’s nothing better than enjoying a space of time with good friends and music.

——

That’s it for this week. I heard back from just a few folks about the new online concert venue. I’d love to have more folks weigh in on whether I should do these on Facebook Live or StageIt.com. Let me know.

Best always,

Tom

Online Concerts Big Change

I have really been enjoying doing my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert series for this past two and a half years. It’s a great way to connect with friends on a regular basis who can’t be where I’m playing. I have been using Concert Window for these concerts, and it has been overall a fairly good experience although sometimes the quality has been glitchy, and some of you have had trouble logging in or getting booted off during the show. Well, Concert Window just announced that they are closing their service on September 16th, so I’ll be switching to another service. I could either switch to another service similar to Concert Window that I’ve found called StageIt or I could switch to Facebook and use Facebook Live. I do my concerts for free although some of you are very kind and throw a tip my way. StageIt takes a higher percentage of tips (approaching 40%) than Concert Window does at 30%, while with Facebook I could put a PayPal.me link in the video description that would take 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction. Both StageIt and Facebook are very good quality video and audio. StageIt is set up specifically by musicians for musicians, so there are other parts of their service that may be helpful. I may have a lot more viewers on Facebook. There are other services like YouTube Live and Twitch, but they each have their comptomises. I am open to other suggestions you might have. I did quite a bit of research on each service. So what do you prefer? My fear is that some people who like Concert Window will be opposed to using Facebook while others who are Facebook friends and have never particularly liked Concert Window will be reluctant to try a similar service in StageIt. Let me know. I so value these concerts and the opportunity to play for you all, and I want this to be a smooth transition.

——

What have I been up to?

Last Monday was a fun day at the Royal Gorge Bridge with many folks stopping by the stage to listen and interact - even a group from Korea!

Thursday was a huge group of folks for the next-to-last barbecue at the Yellow Pine. We had to turn away a bunch of people. It was a wonderful evening.

Friday was my concert at the Merc in La Veta with Daniel Market, and it was a heck of a night! We swapped songs and stories, and some folks said it was the best show they’d ever seen at the Merc. That’s awfully high praise, and it was a joy to be a part of.

——

What am I up to this week?

Monday, Tuesday, and Friday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills. We’ve really been enjoying these afternoons, and I’d love to have you there if you’re up for a fun time at the Royal Gorge.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 is the last barbecue of the season at the Yellow Pine. There will be an evening there of BYO A&W (appetizers and wine) on Thursday, September 5th that I’m also playing for, but this is the last barbecue. If you’d like to be there I’d suggest calling right now - 719-742-3528. As I said above, we had to turn away a lot of folks last week, and I’m sure this last week will be the same. I can’t wait!

——

That’s it for this week. Let me know what you think about the online concert venue choice.

Best always,

Heartache

My heart aches this Sunday evening after the weekend's news. There is so much beauty and joy in the world, and yet some insist on spreading hatred and fear. Sometimes they spread it out of fear, and sometimes it’s just malicious manipulation for kicks. I don’t understand them, and yet I know that they are me and I am them. We are all connected. And then people respond with hatred and anger. And so my heart aches. I continue to spread all the love and goodwill I can, but sometimes it is discouraging. It is worth trying. It is worth continuing to love. The hardest part is not knowing what to do next. So I head to bed with a heavy heart. And now it’s Monday morning, and my mind didn’t ease overnight. It’s strange how sometimes my purpose and awareness kicks in and gives me peace. Just as I wrote last night, I don’t know what to do next. My heart says to love even more. I know that I am an endless wellspring that is part of the divine force of the universe, and letting that spring flow is the best thing I can do. Love is always the answer - no matter what the question. Someday I’ll understand. Someday we’ll all understand.

What have I been up to?

Monday was a pretty day at the Royal Gorge Bridge playing music with Dennis Mills. We had some really nice folks stop by to listen and chat.

Thursday was a wonderful night at the Yellow Pine Barbecue. There were so many good friends and new faces. It was a joy!

Friday was really sweet night at Bistoro. The food and friends really made the evening. We may need to start having a cover charge of some sort to help costs at the restaurant. Let me know if you’re okay with that.

Saturday was a memorial and two parties up in Cuchara with more good friends, and hugs, smiles, and tears were bountiful.

Sunday was my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert, and I played old country tunes for memories and toe tapping. It was a blast!

What am I up this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills in the great outdoors. We’re having a great time playing oldies and originals. Come on out if you can.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 is the penultimate (next-to-last) time for the Yellow Pine Barbecue. This has been a great summer in the barn playing for some wonderful folks. If you’ve wanted to make it there then come on out before the season is over. You need to make a reservation by Tuesday. 719-742-3528

Friday 7-9 is a very special concert at the La Veta Mercantile swapping songs with my friend Daniel Market. Daniel is a brilliant songwriter, and I’m honored to share the stage with him. Expect an evening of laughter and reflection in the best songwriting tradition. Tickets are $20 at the door or $15 at their Facebook page. We’d love to have you.

——

That’s it for this week. Today I’m going to reflect and try to show love to everyone I meet, starting with you.

With love,

Tom

Getting Along

I’m approaching a more delicate topic with my usual mind-frame today - getting along.  I spent last week with lots of different people - old friends, family, and new acquaintances.  If you’ve read my thoughts in the past you’ll know that I see the world pretty plainly.  I believe that love is the most important thing and that ultimately we are all interconnected - scientifically and spiritually.  But in the world there are many mind-frames.  So when I interact with other people I look into their eyes and try to see where they are in their journey in this life.  Some are angry and distant - reflecting a world that has been unfair to them and has made them suspicious and fearful.  Some are warm and are instantly relatable - like an old friend I’ve shared many moments with over a lifetime.  No matter what the situation, I try to not be guarded, sharing the joy of living and a respect for all.  When there are disagreements I try to rise above them and see our interconnectedness.  When there is agreement I try not to talk about issues and others.  Instead I focus on the person and try to share in our lives and experiences.  In this current culture where we thrill at poking and prodding for a reaction it is more difficult to get along.  But I believe in the end we will see that it is worthwhile and that our differences make us stronger and more fulfilled.  Love is always the goal.

What have I been up to?

Monday at the Royal Gorge Bridge was a beautiful day - much cooler and fun all around.  Unfortunately, one of the sound engineers we have worked with several days has had to end his summer work with a foot infection that has caused him to have his leg amputated below the knee.  We wish him the best as he heals and adapts.

Thursday at the Yellow Pine was a really cool day too.  There were many friendly faces and even a visit from Daniel Market whom I’ll be playing a few gigs with in August and early September.

Friday was a wonderful concert at Philmont Scout Ranch during the annual reunion where hugs were all around and music that warmed our hearts and memories was in abundance.

What am I up to this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30  I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with my bass-playing friend Dennis Mills.  We are having a great time learning new songs and interacting with the visitors there, and I’d love to have you if you’re up for a Royal Gorge visit.

Thursday 6:30-8ish I’m at the Yellow Pine for the Barbecue.  I say “8ish” because the ending time is never the same - when folks are dancing and making requests we go longer.  Either way it is a great experience with good food in the great old barn accompanied by my music.  If you’d like to be a part of it call 719-742-3528 for a reservation by Tuesday.

Friday 6-9 I’m at Bistoro for the wonderful atmosphere and food that Joette, Pellumb, and their staff put out in their lovely establishment.  It is a true pleasure to be part of their Bistoro family.  Please support them and their support of live music and artistic living and eating.

Saturday I have two private parties in Cuchara that will have me jumping all day with great friends.

Sunday 7-8:15 MDT is my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert.  I LOVE doing these concerts from my living room.  It is my chance to play for those who can’t make it to my gigs because of proximity or scheduling.  Some people just prefer the homey vibe and intimacy.  Either way I’d love to have you tune in from whatever screen you happen to be in front of.  Just point your browser to concertwindow.com/tommunch  at 7:00 mountain time and sit back and listen.  You can even comment on the chat window or send me an email or text if you like.

——

That’s it for this week.  I so enjoy life and the opportunities I have to share music and friendship with so many folks.  Getting along is just the start.

Best always,

Tom

Looney for the Moon

I had an interesting week in which I got completely swept up in the anniversary of the first moon landing. So what captivated me about the moon landing anniversary? Well, many things. For one it was a return to what seems like a simpler time, although I know there was a heck of a lot of turmoil in the world at the time. It was also a time of coming together for the whole world to unite and realize that humans are capable of big dreams and accomplishments far beyond our squabbles. But the biggest thing for me was how it made my heart soar for the stars - not just for adventure, but a strange longing and a knowing that we belong out there. I have flying dreams (and I know many folks do) where I zoom across the land above snow-capped mountains and up into the jet-black night dotted with stars and galaxies. I’ve said before that I think we are tied to the universe in spiritual and physical ways that we don’t understand. We are made of those stars, and somehow they are our home. The astronauts on Apollo 11 and many other missions talked of having mystical experiences and epiphanies about life and their place in the cosmos. So this last week I watched and read countless things about that first landing with a fascination that is hard to explain. Joni Mitchell said it well: “We are stardust. We are golden. We are billion-year-old carbon.”

What have I been up to?

Monday, Tuesday and Friday were fun days at the Royal Gorge Bridge playing music with Dennis Mills. One day we even dedicated a whole hour to songs about the moon!

Thursday at the Yellow Pine Barbecue was a lovely night with old friends and a cool and big family who rented out the whole ranch.

Sunday was playing at the First United Methodist Church in Castle Rock. I really enjoyed meeting and talking to the folks and sharing my music. I sang several of the songs that I wrote for Cuchara Chapel services that I hope to include on my upcoming album.

What’s up this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills on the big south-side stage. The weather could get interesting today, so I know it will be an eventful day.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 I’m at the Yellow Pine Barbecue. These nights at the Yellow Pine have been very special, and I’d love to have you if you’d like to come. Call 719-742-3528 for a reservation by Tuesday.

Friday 8-10 I’m playing at Philmont Scout Ranch at a concert for current and former staff. I always love playing for the folks there!

That’s it for this week. I’ll be reveling in the moon all week.

Best,

Tom

What Is Real?

I was listening to a podcast this morning on our walk that brought up the question of “What is real?” It got me thinking just how flexible the answer can be. I have written before that reality is what we choose and what we make of it. I still believe that and see it in the world. In all kinds of situations people decide what is real and then act on it. It’s what the idea of science sought to define once and for all, but it’s also what science ultimately blew apart with ideas of quantum physics and a world that doesn’t obey physical laws at the smallest levels. In some instances we see people using reality distortion - people telling us that we didn’t see or read what we thought we did, or people inspiring us to feats beyond our abilities. In the end we agree together what reality is, and that fits into the physical laws of the universe as we experience them. This agreement takes some push and pull to figure out. It can leave us feeling individually confused - asking daily what is real. For me it really doesn’t matter as long as we deal with each other in love and an awareness that we are all in this together. Love each other, and reality will work itself out.

What have I been up to?

Monday was a hot day at the Royal Gorge Bridge - both weather-wise and musically. We had some nice folks roll through, and we did have to stop for rain at one point too.

Thursday was a sweet night at the Yellow Pine. I had some old and new friends come out which made it very special.

Saturday the book signing and dance in Cuchara was a blast. The old community center has a magic that is so much fun to tap into. Memories of dances 50 years ago spurred us into music and dancing nirvana.

——

What am I up to this week?

Monday, Tuesday and Friday 12:30-4:30 I’ll be playing at Royal Gorge Bridge with my bass friend Dennis Mills on the big stage on the south side of the bridge. It should be a stellar time, and I’d love to have you visit if you’re up for an afternoon at the Royal Gorge.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 I’m back at Yellow Pine Barbecue. These nights are so rewarding and enjoyable, and having friends there makes it even better. Call by Tuesday for a reservation if you’d like to be a part of it - 719-742-3528.

Sunday I’m doing something different. My agent friend Terri booked me to play for two church services (8:30 and 10:00) at the First United Methodist Church in Castle Rock. The church is very music oriented, and they often feature outside musicians in their services. This will be a treat. So if you’re in the area come on out.

——

That’s it for this week. I’m still thinking about what I wrote above about reality. I think someday we’ll all understand, and that not-knowing is part of what this life is supposed to be about.

Best always,

Tom

In the Zone

A curious thing is happening to me that happens every summer – I’m getting in the zone when I’m playing. I’ve been playing for three straight weeks at more gigs than I can count. Doing all this playing has made my fingertip calluses rock hard and my voice strong with a little edge. It also puts me into an almost dream-like state from lack of sleep and blurring together of gigs. This dream-like state makes me feel different things when I’m performing and seems to give me a weird kind of spiritual connection to the audience. It’s actually pretty cool although it’s also a bit trippy. I tend to forget that this phenomenon can and does happen. I’m sure that musiciansm who tour for long periods of time or actors who do a long run of theater shows experience this too. People working on intense projects for a period of time, or even candidates in the heat of a long political campaign probably see this as well. It lets me go on extended interconnected songs and moments of oneness with the audience that are magical and, yes, spiritual. I’m sure there is a very profound scientific and metaphysical reason for this that we’ll someday know and understand. I just enjoy being caught up in it!

——

What have I been up to?

Last Monday and Wednesday were fun days at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills. Monday we had to stop for rain and thunder for almost half the gig, but we had great people to play to, and it was beautiful.

Thursday for Independence Day was a huge night at the Yellow Pine Barbecue. There were so many good friends and big smiles and dancers! It was the one-year anniversary of the fire that devastated so many homes in the area and the miracle of the rain that saved the Yellow Pine and the town of Cuchara. Folks were emotional and thankful.

Friday was a sweet night at Bistoro with good friends and new faces. Yes! Love these folks!

Saturday was a run down to New Mexico to play at Red River Ski Area for a Music on Top concert. I ended up playing inside with rain that nixed the deck stage, and it turned into an acoustic gig when the power went out for the valley and the next one over. It was still a blast, and the difficulties made for a memorable camaraderie. I had a bunch of family out which made it extra special.

Saturday night was a concert at Philmont Scout Ranch that was very enjoyable. I had some surprise attendees and some surprise songs with Ellyn Washburne sitting in that really made the night.

Sunday I played Art in the Park in La Veta for a mellow, contemplative, and appreciative crowd. It was a highlight of my week. I got to do all kinds of songs that I dearly love.

Sunday night was my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert, and it was a good one. I opened it up to requests, and the audience picked some great songs!

What’s up this week?

Monday 12:30-4:30 I’m back at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills. We are gelling in a very neat way in our duo that I’d love to have you hear. I’m getting to play a lot of electric guitar which is a treat.

Thursday 6:30-8:00 I’m at the Yellow Pine Barbecue for another fun night in the old barn. We are into the heart of the summer now, and the nights there are very special. I’d love to have you there. If you want to come, please call by Tuesday to make a reservation at 719-742-3528.

Saturday 7:00-9:00+ at the Cuchara Community Center I’m playing for a book signing for Gary Bridges and Justin Toll followed by a dance with Dennis Mills that should be a really fun night. I think it may be one of the best nights of the summer in Cuchara.

——

That’s it for this week. I’m glad to have a week that’s a little slower this week. It will be great to have a night at home with Jen and the pets. We’ll see if I can stay in the zone!

Best always,

Tom

Spirituality

I have a hard topic this morning, but it’s also joyful. I write a lot about philosophical and spiritual matters. I truly believe that we are all connected at our deepest levels - both scientifically through physics and spiritually through consciousness. I believe that love is the most important thing in the universe, and  that fear is the antithesis. I believe that our culture needs love more than ever now, and that we have divisions that are driven by fear. I was reminded of this during the past week in many ways, but two instances were more direct than ever. First, I listened to parts of the
Democratic debates. The candidate Marianne Williamson directly stated that love and fear were the two driving factors in our culture today. That jumped right up in my path. I don’t like mixing spirituality with politics, but she is talking about much of the same things as I am. The idea that spirituality could be the core of a candidate was something that didn’t occur to me somehow. Second, I had an old acquaintance who recently has been accused of wrong-doing come to me for support and music. I don’t think things happen randomly in this life, and it occurred to me that this was an opportunity for love instead of fear. We all are connected, and supporting him through music and friendship was what I chose to do. In both the debate instance and the acquaintance instance I was given demonstrations of my beliefs. That was profound for me. I am trying to live out my convictions and my truth.

What have I been up to?

Last week was a whirlwind.

Monday, Tuesday, and Friday were all fun days at the Royal Gorge Bridge. It got a little warm on Friday, but Dennis Mills and I had fun swapping tunes and interacting with the folks from all over the world.

Thursday at the Yellow Pine Barbecue was another group of fine folks and fun songs.

Saturday night the outdoor concert at Lucy’s in La Veta was a small but very intimate group. It was very enjoyable.

Sunday turned into a house concert of sorts at the Cuchara Mountain Park opener. As it rained outside lightly we shared favorite tunes in the warmth of the day lodge. Jan Davis even brought his bass and sat in. It was a lovely evening.

What am I up to this week?

Monday and Wednesday 12:30-4:30 I’m at the Royal Gorge Bridge with Dennis Mills for this Independence Day week. It should be a great time.

Thursday 6:30-8:30 I’m at the Yellow Pine Barbecue again. Since it’s July 4th and Independence Day I’ll be pulling out the patriotic spirit and doing some old and new favorites. It should be fun. If you’d like to be part of it call to make a reservation by Tuesday at 719-742-3528.

Friday 6:00-9:00 I’m at Bistoro in Pueblo for our first-Friday monthly. I really enjoy playing in this friendly place full of friends and memories. Please come out if you can.

Saturday 12:00-2:00 I’m playing for the Concerts on Top concert series in Red River, New Mexico, at the top of the ski area. I’ve done this for a few years every summer now, and you couldn’t pick a more beautiful spot to play music than on the deck of the ski area big above the town. It’s always magical.

Saturday evening I’m also playing a concert at Philmont Scout Ranch outside Cimarron, New Mexico.  I love playing for the younger folks and old friends at Philmont every summer. It’s a highlight of my summer.

Sunday 11:00-1:00 I’m at the park in La Veta for Art in the Park.  This is always a great time on July 4th weekend in La Veta, and I look forward to it!

Sunday 7:00-8:15 I’ll be back at home for my First-Sunday Online Living Room Concert. After a stellar week like I’m about to have I will be in fine form for an eclectic evening in my living room sharing tunes. This is my opportunity to play for those of you who are too far away or unable to come to one of my outings. Please tune in if you can on whatever screen device you have handy at concertwindow.com/tommunch.

——

That’s it for this week. I can’t believe all the opportunities I have to play in the summertime. I hope you are enjoying your summer, and Happy Independence Day!

Best always,

Tom
